Leith Central Edinburgh

Post by R16v »

Hello all

I'm relatively new to this forum and decided to take the plunge and post something I have been struggling to find any information on.

I have been trying to find any information or pictures of Leith Central Edinburgh in LNER days, I do have a very large array of books about Edinburgh and most just brush on Leith Central but never any real in-depth details of the station, it's signalling or any real information about what services it had like 1st and 2nd class waiting rooms or where the subway emerged from on the Easter road side and general station clutter was..

I have tried the library service for maps but seem their maps are not in very much detail and hitting a real dead end on this and would love to find out a lot more about this station

any response would be most grateful and very welcomed..

Never seen any layout of Leith central,, but there is a great layout of Leith citadel.

I really wanting information and research for a possible layout, and cause I grew up there :). I have very detailed plays of haddington, but I have a user space of 35 foot by 25 foot that I have built for a layout. :)

Wasn't this station used for a scene in "Trainspotting", just before the bulldozers moved in?

My understanding was that one of the characters meets another in the scene at Leith Central, and asks, "What are you doing? Trainspotting?" giving the film its title. Of course, the question was ironic.
I went to Leith Central (with a permit - the ScR were always obliging if you travelled by rail) in its shunter and dmu depot days in the late 60's. The conversion from a passenger terminal didn't seem to be very comprehensive, and the entrance (which, I think, was on a
busy street) seemed to be much as it probably was in passenger days. Since then, I've never seen a photo of it as either a station or a depot. My only photographs concentrated on demec Hunslets and didn't show any of the surroundings. How one's interests change...

Perhaps not much help but the track layout at the station throat in the 1930s can be found here:- http://maps.nls.uk/view/82877370

Like 1H was 2E I visited the station during its days as a diesel depot but never took any photos there. Curiously it was the one depot in Scotland that I can remember getting thrown out of - stupidly I had not asked permission, thinking I could just nip in from Leith Walk and quickly note down the numbers of the line of shunters. On subsequent Sunday visits I asked permission and was never refused as far as I can remember.
