Batley, West Yorkshire
Could somebody please enlighten me. I have been told by an ex resident that Batley had BOTH LNER AND LMS trains running through in the Pre-Nationalisation era. Would that be correct and if so, did they share the same platforms and track as an early photo I have shows what appears to be 2 lines running between facing (curved) platforms and another 'through' track on the outside curve of one of them (along with various sidings).
(I ask this as I understand that in some instances - maybe 'usually' - the 2 companies had separate stations, even if they were more or less alongside each other). Any suggestions of other 'shared' stations - if they did exist - with 2 or 3 platforms would also be much appreciated.
Thanks

Graeme,
The following link may help.

There was a physical connection between the stations on this map, but essentially there were two separate stations at Batley, the first being the LNWR one and the later GNR platforms alongside.

Re: Batley, West Yorkshire
Do only the post-grouping shared stations interest you?
Pre-group, the three platforms at Grimsby Town served the needs of both the GC and the GN, although of course it was all LNER after 1923. The sharing arrangement had existed from the time of opening of the station, originally involving the MS&L as predecessors to the GC, and the East Lincolnshire Railway which was effectively part of the GN from the outset. The whole initially isolated route between Louth and New Holland was at first worked jointly over its full length until the MS&L was persuaded for a while to cosy up to the companies allied to the LNWR. Grimsby then became the frontier post and the line was even deliberately obstructed at one time to keep the GN trains out of the station!

Many thanks Atlantic 3279 and JASd17 for your replies. I tried to respond directly to each of you but according to my computer these did not get through.
Atlantic 3279 - your comments very interesting and the idea of Grimsby did appeal but I was looking for a Yorkshire town that had BOTH LNER and LMS running through during the 'Grouping' period.
JASd17 - your link to the map of Batley was brilliant and enabled me to chat to the ex Batley friend now living in New Zealand and 'fine tune' some of my queries. For the purposes of my large Yorkshire 'themed' model railway layout based around a medium sized industrial town with a 3 platform station with both LNER and LMS passing through - and a nearby Dales look branchline and another going to a small fishing village, possibly Staithes, Robin Hoods Bay or the like, Batley (or a name variation thereof to quieten any pedants), will fill the bill.
Really appreciate your help and comments.

Hi Graeme,
I have now picked up your PM, apologies. I will be in touch.
What about one of the east Yorkshire coast branch termini, Hornsea or Withernsea, as the branch addition to your scheme? The latter had a turntable at the end of the platform, instead of a point and head-shunt for a run-round loop. Therefore locos worked boiler first both ways.
Perhaps you could expand your plans, in your own time, for the whole forum, I am sure we would all like to know?

Wakefield Kirkgate was shared by both the LNER and the LMS.

L & Y, Great Northern, LMS and LNER........................Halifax Joint LY and GNR station, lots of different pre grouping and LNER and LMS locos well into BR days . A very good assortment of engine and different train workings almost to the end of steam.
