GCR.
East of Chesterfield and Trent.

The rock looks like limestone - probably chalk (compare to the HBR cuttings through the Wolds).
Did the GCR have much going through the Lincolnshire Wolds?

Sorry everyone, the answer is:

Hexthorpe Junction on the Great Central Route from Sheffield to Doncaster

The GCR class 9J (J11 under LNER ownership) is passing Hexthorpe Junction signal box, heading west, circa 1920. The Doncaster Avoiding Line diverges left, while the HB&GC Joint passes underneath.

One of the attached photos shows what the signal box looked like in 1969, and the other (courtesy Google Earth) shows the area in 2008. You can clearly see all the trackbeds for the lines..

The GN's Louth to Bardney (SE of Lincoln) line went through a part of the Lincolnshire Wolds. Apparently most of the trackbed is still evident for this line altho it closed to passenger services in 1951 and freight, bit by bit, up till 1960.

Thank you Morgan, but I really thought one of you would get it. Past experience has shown that a lot of people on the forum really know their stuff.
Anyway, thanks also for the link to the 1982 picture. A very nice one that looks as if was taken from exactly the same spot (the overbridge west of the junction).
