D & S Kits GER 6 wheel coach and D & S Kits Sundries Van

Good morning all. A friend has asked if I can find out about the above kits.
I've never seen a D & S kit,
however I see they go for silly money on that auction site.
Does this mean they are good kits or is it just the rarity value?
More importantly, have any of you guys/gals built the GER 6 wheel jobby and/or the Sundries van?
If so, perhaps you will spare the time to outline the build verdict in your valued opinion(s)?
Pointers to ref material would also be very helpful thanks.

Hi Phil,
D & S kits are sought after because they are good kits and also because they cover prototypes which only Danny and our own Bill Bedford have ever offered.
I have a couple of the GE 6 wheelers but have not built them. Most of Danny's kits go together in the same way and very straightforwardly, in my experience. Likewise the Sundries van I have was built when I acquired it but doesn't look horribly complex. Mick B has built that - search out his thread on the old RMWeb (I was looking at it last night).
Isinglass offer the very similar milk van - a 'signature' GE section vehicle. Paul Gallon has built that on RMWeb very recently.
Dan is rerunning some of his 4mm kits in batches at the moment and I'm sure I have seen mention of the GE 6 wheelers, so you may not have to pay ridiculous ebay prices for them if your friend is looking for any more.

Thanks J. Looks like I could 'have a go' for this friend then!!
Oh, I keep meaning to come over to Ormsby Hall (purely for the scones and tea you understand). When do you do 'duty' there?

I'd have a go, Phil. I'm sure you won't regret it.
Ormesby Hall is closed until March now, but you'd be welcome on a Monday evening. We only run to chocolate biscuits, though, no scones in the off-season.

Good afternoon.
Here are the boxes! As mentioned elsewhere, inside are nice but thin etches!
I really would appreciate any help with references for the coach. I have the van in Tatlow.
Of course if anyone has one built and has some pics that would be excellent.
Many thanks, P @ 36E

Hi Mallard, I have built a few D&S kits over the years, and though they are not "shake the box" simple, they do make up into nice models. I should say I am modelling in 7mm and not 4mm. I would have to search hard to find fault, and most problems I had were down to my lack of ability. Thinking back, I did find some of the whitemetal castings were a bit flimsy, I am thinking of the spring hangers and perhaps lost wax brass castings would have been a better, (but more expensive), option.
In the attached photos there is an all brake, a sundries van, and a brake third. I apologize for the unfinished roof on the Br3rd, it is a replacement for the original wooden one that I fitted over ten years ago. It split, and I am replacing it with aluminum.
The coaches are painted in scumbled teak finish and the van is supposed to be varnished teak. I used a Pantone coloured marker pen to simulate the Teak after looking at colour photos, (best I can do from this side of the Atlantic). In this light it does look a bit too red.
Cheers,
Sweedy.

Thanks owd. They look really lovely. I think I just need to get my head straight before 'opening the box' with these two kits. They are for someone else and I think I'm just a bit worried about making a hash of something. If they were mine they would still be in 'the drawer' of things to do!

Hi Mallard,
I built a DnS 4 wheeler some yrs back, I will trawl through old photos for it.
They go together really well, I built mine with the compensation and part soldered, part resin. If you have built with Brass before they you will be fine. The only problem I had was with the tumble home on the laminated sides, if I did it again I would form it first on both parts then attach them or build the jig as suggested in the instructions. For some reason at the time I thought I knew better than Dan.
Really nice models and a shame they aren't still available.
Thanks
Simon

Simon. Nice job(s) there lad. Very grateful for your bother to dig out the pics. Much appreciated. Tublehome tip good thanks; I've done a few Comet laminates on Gresleys so I know it's a bit of a chore.

Here are the contents of the boxes. It has taken two weeks to open those boxes!
Ever so thin etches; oh er!
