The LNER Encyclopedia

I've done quite a few locomotive projects over the last few years. These are all accessible on my blog to read through, and a selection of these projects with photographs plus links to the blogs in question are provided below for each one.

I make no apologies for the quality (or lack there of!) of the modelling, and if any of the blogs at least stimulates some discussion and thought, and maybe even a bit of modelling elsewhere, then it has done all I have asked of it and more.

All I can say about the smokebox is that it looks distinctly Great Eastern to me

Morning all,

I'm thinking of building a model of the lone Thompson D Class loco from the upcoming D49 model Hornby is releasing. I have a Thompson bogie, a suitable tender and a couple of undetailed Hornby D49 bodyshells for such a conversion. However there are two things eluding me at present:



This is how I want to model the locomotive, but I have as yet not worked out what type of smokebox door this is. It's not the standard D49 smokebox and looks to be a K3 one, albeit minus the top handrail. What type is it, and where can I find a suitable one to fit the Hornby body?

Lastly, the nameplates. I haven't found any of my usual sources of plates have "The Morpeth" made up, but there is a model of this engine on the PDK website and it has fantastic etched nameplates. I've sent them an email about a week ago but to no avail.

Does anyone know of anyone who produces/has produced this particular set of nameplates?

Not if the Holden B12 above is anything to go by.

I was going on this, but now I think of it, I'm being drawn towards it looking like a V3 smokebox door (ala Bacchy V3)

That is actually a good shout. I will investigate...

For your quick comparison pleasure;

apart from the two little knobs on the v3 and different position lamp irons, almost identical to my eye

Im Thinking ET would have possibly used one of his standard components like a B1 for instance,

It also looks remarkable similar to that on the B12/3. Remember that a certain E Thompson supervised the fitment of the B12 with B17 type boilers so.....

Methinks a cheapo Hornby B12 body, podge out the smokebox door and attack it with files.

EDIT: whoops, I meant Fleabay, please don't stone me

I've narrowed it down to a K1 or a V3 smokebox. V3 smokebox off a Bachmann engine is a no go - it's part of the moulding! So will have to find an alternative in whitemetal or brass.

Two problems with the B12 smokebox: 1) I already thought of it and tried a spare I had. The outer diameter is greater than the D49, and 2) it has the cut off section at the bottom, like the B12 smokebox.

Otherwise not a bad shout as it does have the extended smokebox straps like the one in the photograph above.

Didn't know he did one! I'm reliably informed that the Dave Bradwell B1 "mould 9" which includes the later smokebox door (same as on the K1) is suitable for this conversion. I've sent off an email asking for clarification on another matter and hoping to have bought a set tomorrow.

In other news - who knew! Modelmaster do The Morpeth as a set of etched plates. One more thing to cross off the list!
