LNER ex-ECJS 12-wheel Luggage/Lavatory/Composite D.16

Post by EdgeHill8A »

This is my 4mm scale model of LNER ex-ECJS Luggage/Lavatory Compo D.16, as running on the GC section after 1927. The model is made from a set of Peter K etchings purchased on Ebay. They presented a good many difficulties, but turned out in the end. Luckily the purchase included the correct D&S bogies, which are no longer obtainable. I trust that my representation of teak is acceptable. As always these close-up photographs expose imperfections which are not apparant on the actual model.

Very nice too. The corridor connections are a weakness, but I'm sure they look better when the coach is in a rake.

It looks excellent, I too have some Peter K etches I the to do pile and will no doubt face a few challenges. But it's nice to see what can be made of them if you stick at it.

super model! These used to sit quite often in the Marylebone-Immingham 'Scandinavian cruise' boat trains. Very majestic carriages

Morning EdgeHill,

What a coincidence. I've almost finished one of these as well - this photo is a few weeks old now.

Image

A few questions, if I may; I have the Isinglass drawing, but he doesn't show any corridor handrails. Did you find a photo anywhere? Neither Hoole nor Harris had one as far as I could find. Not being sure whether it should have them or not, I didn't put them in. Also, weren't there lavatories at the extreme ends of the coach? The drawing showed separate ladies and gents in both 1st and 3rd, the ladies being the centre ones.

I found the clerestory etch very frail and prone to breaking and it wasn't a very good fit on the roof. How did you make your roof? I see you've put the end step on the roof - I didn't bother. Mine also has WCJS bogies as, as you say, the D & S ones are not available.

The Peter K etches are available again from http://www.kemilway.com/peter-k.html.

Hello gents. Lovely work on these magnificent carriages. According to the information I have from Hoole's book on ECJS and drawings issued by the NERA, these are models of Dia 6, which had 3 Firsts, 4 Thirds, and a luggage compartment with double doors. The Dia 16 was similar, except that it had 5 Thirds and a smaller luggage compartment. Both diagrams had only two lavatories near the centre of the vehicle. At the 1st end was an attendants station, while the luggage compartment and a vestibule were at the 3rd end. In the mid 20's all were cascaded to the former GCR, GNR, and one to the GER.

So far, I have not seen a photo of any of these diagrams specifically. However, the corridor side of every ECJS 12 wheel clerestory seems to show corridor handrails.

Hope this helps

Interesting. EdgeHill says D 16, you say D6, my Isinglass drawing is D10. Did they build several internal variants to the same external layout? I'll have to have another glance at Ken Hoole's book and check what diagram he said they were. My etches certainly matched the drawing and AFAIR matched Hoole's book as well. Peter K only lists one CL, so we must be looking at the same etches.

Hello again.

You are quite right. The D10 is yet another variant, with 3 firsts, 2 central lavs, 2 thirds, a luggage alcove, and a third dining saloon with 2 1/2 bays.

Just a little comment re livery.
The GNR painted roofs with read lead upto about 1912, after that time normal white lead was used.

Thank you for the kind comments. Sorry for the typo, ECJS Diagram 6, not 16. The handrails are based on photos in Ken Hoole's ECJS book, pages 69 and 75, which seem to show them on all windows on the corridor side, and just over the door droplights on the compartment side (I guess to keep people from leaning out).

Corridor connections - these are always a problem. On balance I prefer these somewhat over-scale but working ones which allow the gangways to close up when two vehicles are coupled. Otherwise you get an unsightly gap between coaches.

Couplings - my own, very simple, really Alex Jackson without the auto-uncoupling parts. Just two ph/b wires with a 30 degree bend, set at 45 degrees (90 degrees to opposing couplings) which just ping together when pushed together. Uncoupling is by hand with a "shunter's pole".

Livery - the coach is in LNER livery, numbered 52014 after transfer to the GC section in 1927 and hence towards the end of its days. I did not attempt lining. My layout is supposed to be 1930.

Jwelleans' coach is very fine as well. Yes, the clerestory is very fragile. I strengthened the lower edges with .3mm n/s wire and soldered the sides to a flat section to make an inverted U. Then a plasticard outer roof. The main roof is from wood with a plasticard overlay moulded over it in a hot oven. I found it all fitted pretty well. I read somewhere that the end steps were fitted in later years. I always make my roofs removeable - this one is held in place with a long bolt down through the lavatory compartment.

I might try another similar one when I get the urge!
