I am intending to rename an A4 to 'Osprey', this name was only carried up to 1942 when it was renamed 'Andrew K. McCosh' . Can anyone tell me if the 'Osprey' nameplates would have been Brass or Stainless Steel and what would the background colour have been?

Jerry

"Locomotives in Detail - Gresley 4-6-2 A4 Class" by David Clarke, page 43, says in regard to the A4 nameplates from 1937, that "... the background colour was usually black, and were normally fitted with the front top corner close to the painted black curve of the smokebox."
He also says "..... (were) cast in brass, (and) were originally chrome plated." (italics my addition, to preserve sense)

11 of the A4s (including the engines named for the Coronation) did carry red background on the nameplates in 1938, but Osprey was not one of them.

This site gives many options for nameplates, including both red and black background, etch and transfer types.
