The LNER Encyclopedia

I am building an N1, 69443, based at 37C Bradford in 1956 and I want to put some carriages behind it. I know they were used for local passenger workings in the West Riding, but I have no idea how the train formation was made up.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a book or books that will help. Also what colour would the carriages be at this time.

You might try The Great Northern in the West Riding by Martin Bairstow (ISBN 1-871944-19-8). Quite a few pictures of N1s (sadly only black and white) on the lines west of Bradford. I'm no coach expert but the trains look to be mainly two coach formations made up of Gresley non-corridor suburban stock. One picture shows an articulated set. There's also a nice pic of your chosen N1 at Hammerton Street.

The coaches would be either Gresley or Thompson suburbans which are available as plastic kits from Ian Kirk. Oh, with the odd GN artic twin for which I reckon you're on your own.

Colour in 1956 would be plain carmine.

Found the following coaches in my unmade kits box. Ian Kirk 8831-LNER Suburban Semi-Corridor Composite, 8832-LNER Suburban 4 Compartment Brake 3rd and 8834-LNER Suburban 8 Compartment Full 3rd. So I think these will do to make up a three coach set.

If I am wrong please let me know. Also I think Ian Kirk do quads and artic twins.

A three coach set would normally be made up of two brake thirds and a composite.

Kirk do indeed do the artics.

They're not the easiest of kits to make up and the articulation units are a little primitive but they do make up nicely and, with fettling, run well.
