The LNER Encyclopedia

I model in a computer simulator called Trainz, so to create I use a 3d CAD program called Blender. When modeling GWR wagons I have a number of books mainly by Russel that document and have plans for practically every wagon, van or carriage that ever ran on the GWR.

I can do some approximations for LNER by repainting GWR stock, a seven plank wagon is a seven plank wagon and doesn't vary very much from company to company. One of the people I'm working with is into LNER and does some very nice textures for them. What I'm interested in is plans and photographs of wagons, vans, and carriages.

Suggestions please.

Indispensable: any of the LNER/GNR books by Michael Harris, especially 'LNER Standard Gresley Carriages'. Peter Tatlow's 'LNER Wagons', has been through several editions and currently being reissued in four volumes (Vol. 3 expected this year).

I'm not familiar with your software but don't forget that the LNER was much more of an agglomeration than the GWR (which, as I understand it, simply absorbed a few rivals in 1923 and continued much as before). The LNER could not afford to replace locos and stock it inherited and so away from the prestige routes older coaches and wagons persisted until very late - often into BR days. So you can justify GNR, NER, GER, etc. stock as well depending on the area being depicted. There are societies and publications for each of these.

Thanks I had a look through ABE books for the titles. Interesting as was the Isinglass Models, HMRS looks like they have finally got their drawings better organised so that is another possibility.

Sounds crazy but I don't model layouts or routes I'm much more into creating model wagons and vans at the moment. I let others combine the models into layouts etc then grab a copy of their layout. The nice thing about computers is you can make a copy of something very easily. Because of the limitations of real time rendering to much detail can bring the computer to its knees so super highly detailed plans are not essential. Steam locos are also a bit specialised. I'll have to think and see what my priorities are as there are a number of other companies I'm interested in modeling so I have to balance cost of reference material as well but many thanks for the information. I shall have to think.
