Old Hornby LMS coaches

Post by roverman »

Not strictly LNER but I'm sure it's of interest.
Hope some experienced modeller can offer me advice. I’ve got a few of the older Hornby Stanier LMS coach bodies, the ones based on the common chassis with the window vents moulded into the glazing. The 57’ composite is a bit of a hash as a model and I was wondering if anybody has bashed one about to make something more realistic. The roof vent positions suggest it should be an open composite but the body doesn’t match up to anything in my LMS coach book (should be a 60’ I think). I’m tempted to try an etched brass overlay and using some old Airfix LMS bogies on a plasticard chassis. I’d be grateful if anybody can offer the benefit of experience and advise on the best sides to go for which would match the roof vents (?) or even if the original body could be chopped into anything realistic. On a purely cost based project I know I should just bin them but I really do enjoy trying my best to make the odd silk purse out of pigs ears!
