P2 in N

There's a few photos of a very good P2 on the N Gauge Society web-site

Does anyone know any more about it? Anyone care to guess what chassis it's based on? In the front view I think I can see an idler gear, making me think it's a re-wheeled 8F, but with scratch-built Caprotti (?) valve-gear.

Alan,

Following a conversation with MikeJ on one of the other forums, we came to the conclusion that this was a Minitrix chassis (motor showing in the cab seems to support this) but are unsure if it started life as a 2-8-2 or not. I have looked at the Farish 8F chassis for a possible conversion (for my P1) and I don't think it is possible to re-wheel this chassis without moving the driving wheel positions to prevent the wheel flanges fouling. I think that best chassis for a P2 would be the Fleischmann Class 39 locomotive but this would need to be rewheeled to get accurate 6'2" driving wheels plus the valve gear modifications.

One thing is certain though, it is possible to build a nice model of a P2 in N gauge!

I remember reading about this in the N gauge journal and i think it started life as a 4P chassis
