Cock 'o' the North help needed

Post by chainsaw18648 »

 hello you brass kit type people,I have really gone and done it this time,I came across a cock o the north '00'guage at a boot fair and bought it, I will need your knowledge to make it run again, first identification of the kit,it has a large letter 'M'embossed on the underside of the wheel retaining plate is this milholme ?.secondly the motor arrangement is a five pole open motor driving a gearbox via a piece of rubber tube, the gearbox is enclosed within a diecast housing and looks rather old,it would also appear to have a compensated chassis ie small springs acting on axel blocks to give some vertical movement, and this seems to be the reason why it was dumped as a project.the cylinder castings are not very good and one is longer than the other a total rebuild is in order and new cylinders made from brass tubing will be made.
I think I will have to make a new chassis and anew motor and gear box fitted (some idea's on that please, mashima perhaps)
the motion is all there but the crosshead slides are ruined I have been told that comet do an etch ???.
the wheels are insulated romfords and the model is set up for tender pick up I would like to change that to loco drive if possible Iknow that to enable it to go round a radius of less than four feet I will need to fit flangeless wheels to one or more axles any opinions on which ones, the body is fine and with a paint strip and some TLC will look good again,so any ideas input or knowledge will be gratefully recieved,in hope mick phillips

Mick,
Springside models do an etched brass Proscale kit of a P2 (unrebuilt) so you may be able to buy a chassis from them - http://www.springsidemodels.com/id22.htm This would probably save you a lot of work. incidentaly, you are looking at just over £200 for the kit and wheels, motor, etc (to give you some idea of how much of a bargain you may have got).

Are you going to put up pictures, etc on a workbench thread as you go along? I would love to see progress. It is something I fancy as a build myself once I have a bit more practice at loco building.
