Hi there
I am planning on building a new model featuring one of the mainline LNER routes out of London (ideally Kings Cross) and am trying to find photos or track plans for any of the interesting parts of the run through the city and the suburbs. Ideally I am looking for an interesting feature such as a raised level or a cutting and some interesting pointwork would be great.
It is going to be a "watching the trains go by" model and I am hoping to run full length expresses as they leave or enter London. Ideally I would like to be able to authentically run some long goods trains too but this is not essential.
If anybody has any interesting ides, links, book advice, I would love to hear from you.
Thanks
NJM

I don't know about track plans in general, but if you settle on a location try the National Railway Museum archives.
As for photos, there are some good ones here:

I don't think you will do better than "The Gresley Beat"

Re: Track plans for leaving London
Thanks. It was Cliff Parsons' Gresley Beat that inspired me in the first place and also by Copenhagen Fields http://www.themodelrailwayclub.org/docs/photoscf.htm. Does anybody know where I might find the track plans for this run out of town?

Hi,
As you don't actually say what period you are modelling, but refer to the Gresley Beat, then I am assuming steam era.
You could try Alan Godfrey Maps - although these may seem very old, the infrasructure/track plans didn't change much until the late 60's.

Also BRM Annual has a bit of a feature on ECML this monh.
After that there are loads of books out there just waiting for you credit card.
Try looking a Bill Hudson's site:-

Alan Godfrey Maps ( http://www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk/ ) have old maps for most of London. Dates are normally late 19th century/early 20th. As for the GNR main line, they cover up to just south of Hadley Wood station.
