I'm looking for photos of two diagrams of GC brake vans. These are D.
70 & 74. Both of these were plain sided with narrow verandas at each
end. D.70 was 12 or 13 ton and 4 wheeled, while D. 74 had six wheels
and was 20 Tons.

If any one can help with pointers to photos of these vans or to the
D.72 express brake van, I would be grateful.

I think one of the 6 wheeled type worked on the Framlingham branch. Check out Peter Payes latest book.

just in case you havent seen them, the relevant diagram book at National Archives is,

RAIL226/151 (Great Central Railway Company/ Locomotive and Rolling Stock records/ Wagon Drawings 1875-1922)
RAIL226/153 (ditto/ specially constructed wagons)

Alas photocopying was really expensive so I did all the 'odd' wagons and fish vans instead when I was last there!

I can't think of any GCR brake van photos other than the obvious sources in Tatlow, Great Central Remembered/ Recalled, etc etc.


I thought diagrams 70 and 74 were ex-LDEC railway, but I cannot for the life of me remember where I read that!!

Yes, they are LDEC, and guess what? I've just found a GA of a D. 70 I had forgotten I had.
