I’ve received the following request which is way beyond my own knowledge as it’s really a modelling question .....

“Can you please help?? My father is due to retire in October from the railways after 47 yrs .

He first started @ Gorton loco and even to this day the old hands [very few now] call each other 9g. I am trying to locate a picture or an idea of how this "9g" was laid out or appeared as I am trying to have the very same made for him when he retires can you help me?”

This is an easy one! The shed code for Manchester (Gorton) in BR steam days was "9G". It should be possible to have a replica oval "9G" shed plate made for your father. I am sure that a web search will locate a suitable supplier. The shed plate indicated the home shed for the locomotive. The plate was attached low down on the smokebox door at the front of the locomotive.
