What kinds of formations were used in LNER Breakdown trains, and what vehicles are available in 4mm scale model form? I'm looking for a smaller crane to run with appropriate departmental stock.

The Match truck has had some CooperCraft Platelayers tools added to finish it off.

As yes, I remember those from the RMWeb forums, they're incredible :) Those models look so good it almost makes me want to force D&S to bring back the 4mm range at gunpoint! :P

Can anyone suggest any alternatives for when I get out of jail?

See if you can get hold of 'LNER Sheds in Camera' by John Hooper. I has shots of a number of different cranes with their trains, and much else of interest.
