Bachmann 50 foot LNWR coaches (yes, there is an LNER connection)
So, Bachmann have announced they're producing a range of five LNWR Fifty Foot bogie gangwayed corridor coaches, with models seemingly well underway.
It might be worth a shout out to some here, as they're doing three versions in the first batch: LNWR livery, plain unlined LMS; and most appropriately for here, in LNER brown, as Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway coaching stock.

Thats pretty cool, its nice to see some pre-grouping stock in production and this might mark the first time I’ve seen the M&GNJR get a mention for a prototype.

Brown, certainly. Teak - I've not seen a photo but I wouldn't rule it out.

There was an interesting discussion on this subject about a year ago.
If I remember correctly the outcome could broadly be summed up as "not impossible, but not likely."
Which is a shame as I'd already painted mine up in 'imitation' teak.....
The first of the LNWR coaches arrived in 1935 and seem to have fairly quickly received M&GN lettering and numbers, but weren't necessarily repainted until later.
There is one photo of a coach in M&GN in Focus that I thought was in imitation teak...but the same photo is used in Digby's Guide to the M&GNJR to illustrate an example (pretty clearly) still in crimson lake....and until I noticed the shot composition was identical I thought they were two entirely different coaches...
...,.the challenges of interpreting black and white imagery I guess.

Well, according to Bachmann, the M&GN never had any ex-LNWR full brakes, so the four coaches they're making in LNER brown are your lot; though to be fair, they said that the four coaches would make a prototypical M&GN rake.

Got an e-mail from Rails today with the prices of these for preorder after 15% had been taken off.
For crimson lake or teak livery, £84.95 each.
For LNWR livery, £93.45 each.
This beats the Ellis Clark quadarts at £325 for 4.

I saw some on the Bachmann stand at Spalding and they were beautiful. If you're inclined to model the LNWR and you can't build kits or paint that livery to the standard you want, even a hundred quid a coach looks a decent deal. However, how many of each would you need to model a realistic mix of carriages?
Leaving the collectors aside, the serious modeller of the LNWR might buy some, but I'm curious as to whether they'll sell in the quantities needed for mass production, unless there's a clever means for the factory to reduce the initial costs which I'm not aware of?

Odd ones off the M&GN did of course appear in excursions to other places, originating on the M&GN, but how much does it make sense to pay for a coach that can only be used in that sort of modelling scenario? There is also a possible use for them in LMS livery on an LNER layout, again as an excursion working. There is for instance a photograph of a train of mixed styles of former LNWR stock, in LMS livery, probably coming from the Sheffield / Manchester area, nearing Cleethorpes in the 1930s behind a J10. I'm not tempted though...
