Re: On my workbench - it's a Sam Fay
I was fortunate enough to see Sam Fay in all it's glory and complete(?) at Scalefour North today. The photo's good as they are, dont do the exquisite quality of the model full justice at all. I was also pleased to meet Morgan face to face. it's really nice to meet people that you correspond with on the site

Now that is one gorgeous beastie...
Re: On my workbench - it's a Sam Fay
Good evening,
Thanks for everybody's kind words and (to RobP) I wish it were finished. Here are a few more pictures of the lining progress. First off a general shot then some rather cruel enlargements of the lining. I have to admit that, to me at least, these make the lining look a bit "iffy" but when I sit back and look at the model as a whole it think it looks OK. Perhaps I'm looking at the exquiste work of Ian Rathbone, in his newish book, too much. Now that is something to aspire to! Anyway there are a few comments on technique employed with each photo.
A general shot of the boiler and running plate assembies.
A close up of the nameplate and crest. After edging the splasher in black with a bow pen the straight vermillion lines were done in the same way. Then the curved vermillion portions were traced out and touched in with a 0000 sable brush. Black between the lines was added after. All done under high magnification. There is some inconsistency of line thickness but the circle around the crest is only 2.5mm diameter!
Close up of the front frames and the Gorton works plate. The number and nameplate set was supplied, to order, by Guilplates.
The right hand cabside still needs the white black white lining panel to be added. I have done this on the left hand side using some water slide decals from Modelmaster. However before this I have put in some reference lines to follow by with a pair of spring bow compasses using the cab edges to offset the line at the correct distance. The vermillion lines were done earlier in a similar way.
The end result is shown here on the left hand cabside. Even though the white line on the waterslide decals is a bit thick I think it gives the right impression versus the consistency of what I can do with the bow pen. More practice required! Oh yes and before I forget John Quick challeneged me to do the white line on the number plate and the lining on the buffer housing. Thanks John! <mutter....mutter....>
Whilst I am here I also have a small appeal for help. The backhead that was supplied in this kit was totally incorrect (GWR I think) and despite pestering Pat Ryan of Modelex was unable to come up with anything. I am happy to scratch build one but I was wondering if anyone knew of a source of a large GCR backhead casting. Better still does anyone have something suitable lurking in the spares box?
That is all for now.....time to get back to the therapy after all this lining....

Hi
re backhead I have a old spare, it is a Millholme lost wax backhead, I think for the LNER Q1 tank the 04 rebuild by Thompson. I dont know much about GCR locos. It has a flat top and is waisted at the base. PM if any good

Hi all,
After a very long break the Sam Fay has finally been finished and posted off to it's new owner today. Just thought I'd post a few pics of the finished article.
Cheers...Morgan

An excellent result, a very good model your standards are worth aspiring to.

I was admiring that on RMWeb, but it keeps going down before I can add any words of praise. Magnificent.
Re: On my workbench - it's a Sam Fay
That does my heart glad to see. A truly excellent model (wish it was mine).
How could you bear to part with it?
(Love the livery)

I agree, you've taken far too much time and trouble and achieved much too nice a result to let somebody else have it! I hope the price was good one

Hi everyone,
Thanks for you kind words. It is nice to finally see it finished and despite my grumbling it has given me a sense of achievement to overcome all the "issues".
JW if you remember when we tested it out on Thurston it seemed to be wired the wrong way round. I nearly forgot this but remembered just as I was packing it into the box to post. I checked it against a Bachy J39 and it was indeed reverse polarity. An embarrassment avoided. Thanks!

Morgan, that's an atonishing bit of work...
Re:
Re-reading this thread, it occurs to me that Modelex do not list it on their websitejwealleans wrote:Is this the kit Pat Ryan was latterly selling? I seem to remember you posting a pic of the etches for me to have a look at before I parted with the cash.

I bought what was almost his last one a few years ago and he said he was dropping it as he couldn't get castings for it.
