Re: Daves C & W Works
Just got the info from 2A.
Front end cover plates page 61, from 27-03-1933 (no time stated) small hinged plates fitted to r/h side.
From 08-1945, 2 bars fitted full width with sliding hatch.
So thats it I will need to remove sliding hatch from my donor body shell.

Re: Daves C & W Works
Here is a little somthing I've been slowly working on for some time, it is a replacement for another version of Humorist I built many years ago with a cut down smokebox door and the vent behind the chimney, I rebuilt is as a standard A3 many years ago and always regretted it. This body is a Hornby tender drive A3 which is being converted to take a Comet chasiss, hence the cutout in the boiler bottom. I've plugged the holes in the smoke box side (don't know what they were for, maybe blinkers ?) altered the dome (thank you Mr King) and started to add details and bits from the Brassmasters detailing etch. The body as supplied came painted BR green so that has been stripped but still needs a bit of cleaning up.
Plus today a package arrived from Mr Bradwell containing one LNER 4200 gal tender kit, so my D49 build I was intending to start last year has got all it's bits and is now on track for a start next year, as I feel things will have improved greatly to enable me to devote some spare time again to serious modelling, after a gap of some considerable time, but thats life.
Here are some pics of the slow progress todate.

Re: Daves C & W Works
I also see Mr jwealleans is doing a D10C, I must get mine finished, it keeps looking at me along with the D113's. They will be completed soon I promiss.
The bogies were altered/rebuilt recently, as it was riding too high, now it alot better, thats what comes of building something without any track and not using my buffer ht gauge.

Re: Daves C & W Works
How did you alter the bogies, Dave? I haven't checked buffer height on mine but the D50 I built was spot on on unaltered bogies. Other than different presstuds, I'm not sure what you can do to change the height?

Re: Daves C & W Works
I dropped the bogies into some hot water and the superglued sides came off, I was then able to move the brass bearings into the top holes and reduce the height of the carriage. I have another set of bogies I got at York show this year and these will be built with OO scale wheels due to wanting to run on 00 as well as EM gauges. I think the press stud is a bit on the tight side for allowing the bogie to swivel. I'm thinking of drilling the floor pan, removing the press studs and carrier and fixing with bolts like my Kirks which allow easy adjustment to ride height, I'm still thinking about that though. The reason I used the lower holes it gave the wheels a bit of clearence to some underframe detail I had added, this detail has now been revised to allow the wheel to clear it, the flange just grazed it in the position they are in now, had it been built to say P4 standard and prototypical track radiuses I don't think there would have been a problem. Never considered that when I was building the thing.
Still it is my first attempt at a brass carriage kit and there was always going to be a learning curve and bits to be remade because of it.

Re: Daves C & W Works
Before doing anything drastic you can use a small rat tailed needle file and run it around the male part of the press stud to thin the waist. Should help.
To reduce ride height snap off the brass sides of the CCU mounting plate, then mount to body using various thicknesses of plasticard until you have the right ride height. If you need to increase ride height you can leave the brass sides in place.

.. and if you overdo it you need to ask the wife for a No. 10 presstud. Don't ask how I know that.you can use a small rat tailed needle file and run it around the male part of the press stud
The bit about using the top hole for Gresley bogies is in the instructions, or I'd probably have done the same thing.

Re: Daves C & W Works
Mike, thanks for that tip, I will try it.
Jwealleans please tell us how you know this detail.
Question, can anybody who has built a Comet A3 chassis post a pic of a plan view and side view if the rear part of the chassis under the cab. I have drawings etc but a picture tells a etc etc.

Re: Daves C & W Works
It's about time I did an update.
First, 3 wagons I have started this week, as I had the soldering iron out.
1st - a NER Dia F9 10t perishable van (I hope it don't)
2nd - a NER Dia K1 cattle truck
3rd - a NBR Dia 67 cattle truck
All are 51L kits which I got at Wakefield a couple of weeks ago.
It might please one of our members to note the W irons.
This is the most time in a long while I've had to give to modeling

Re: Daves C & W Works
As I got the tender for the D49 last month I thought I would also bring that forward.
So far I've managed to start the chasis (Comet), I've fabricated the dust covers for these bogies and for
Humorist from one of the etched blinkers in the A3 Brassmasters detail set.
Also started to alter the body.

Re: Daves C & W Works
Interesting find over the weekend when sorting out old mags, inside one was a sheet of LNER carriage nameboards from Mr Pinock,
D & S Models sheet DS 300-CD, I have a slight recollection I got them from him at York sometime in the mid 90's. They will come in very handy
and are now in safe storage after nearly being binned, I wonder if he still does them.

Hi Dave,
I am not sure he does, are they brass etches?
Is 8ft by 7 inches correct? The latter seems thin, but not by much, an 8 ft anything is not easily handled, gardeners' eye, or worse? Tee Hee.
Anyway, I want Dan to help with a particular project, so no more putting ideas into the collective heads!
Hope to see you soon.
John

Re: Daves C & W Works
Just as an FYI, as we were talking offline about John Peck at Precision Labels, he offers a service printing carriage destination boards where you put in the destinations you want and the style and he produces them. Haven't used them, but noticed it on his website when i was last on there.

Re: Daves C & W Works
Hi john, I will try not to divert him, but can you wait till I get my NER G7 vans from him.
The label boards are printed on cream thin card and divided into 3's, I will post a pic soon.
Right, the info I have about label boards is - GNR boards 8'-0" x 6" x 3/4" thick (drwg 1154N of 1910)
then LNER 8'-0" x 7" x 5/8" thick (drwg 112686D 1928) 9' wide stock.
Destination boards are 2'-8,1/2" long x 3,5/16" high x ? thickness.
Jonathan, thank you for the info, a set on order, I noticed he did those when I was trying to work out his web page.
