That Stirling tender is now sprayed black, so changes to details are now somewhat unlikely, but looking back at the previous steps in the work....
After a coat or U-Pol No8 acid etch grey primer last night, which passed the finger nail scratch test admirably this morning, even on a hidden un-prepared area, I filled a few small gaps then sprayed on a layer of aerosol red primer from that well-known motor spares shop, which dried to the appearance shown below. I suspect the flare at the corner nearest the toolbox needs a tweak now that I've seen these images..

Just a small point, and one that Paul may be able to answer. Did not the Stirling tenders have a different spring and axle box? I had always understood this indeed the only ones that I believed were close were by Malcolm Stelfox when - many years ago - he operated out of Ber Street Norwich.

There are indeed a number of differences between some Stirling axleboxes and some of the later Ivatt ones. But I have to say, I had nothing to do with the original production of any parts of this tender, only the b awful instructions .
I will check with John about the axle boxes, and where they came from, and see how we can move forward. However, I will say that tender 1002
when originally found in 1966 did not have "proper" Stirling axleboxes on all wheels, they were changed before it went into the collection, but at the
time they had been later GNR type. Same as the buffers were not Stirling GNR standard.
Based on much of the subsequent research I have done, I am pretty sure that there was a fair amount of changing around between the various types
of accessories when rebuilding took place. The works was much more pragmatic about things than we latter day modellers are, and frankly if it was to hand and fitted, then that it what went back, so sometimes the axleboxes were not all the same on the rebuild.

Since the rest of you seem to be having problems uploading for free, I am not going to try, but studying some of my Stirling photos today, I can confirm that there were multiple Bolts along and around the frames of the Stirling outside spring tenders.

Good morning all
An interesting thread as I intend building Stirling tenders for my old Kay's J3s (2). One type D and one with inside springs (type G?).
I will look at my pics of type D tenders to see if any had plated coal rails to the rear.
It will be a while before I reply as I'm having computer problems.

You need to be very careful looking at photos of the "D" class tenders. They are not all the same design. Indeed there appears to have been
4 different designs based on my research. I think that the tender built by Greame is actually to Drawing R19, but no extant drawing exists
as far as I can find. But others within the D type include R14/15 and 20. So the details may well be different.

The article in question now has full decoration including weathering and coal. There's a 3 link coupling in place to supplement the bar at the rear and I've re-equipped the J3 loco with a basic hinged fallplate to cover the otherwise rather visble gap. Pick-ups on the tender are wired through to plugs under the loco. I've managed to temporarily attach the brake pull rods to bolster up the brake shoes a bit - slices of black insulating sleeve strips from some wire simply pushed over the ends of the brake yokes are doing the retaining job at present. Running on my layout has presented no problems but there's another test to pass on Grantham at the NEC this weekend before I consider soldering the rods in place, preventing good access to adjust of change wheels. Pictures later this evening with any luck.....

Recent progress:
That last one also shows four Bachmann Fish vans that have had a quick spot of attention recently, although they'll need more in due course. All I've done so far, apart from getting rid of the glaring white roofs and the bizarrely white patches on the sides of the vans that should actually be the slates on which the relevant notes / messages were chalked up, is to change some of the couplings to provide a range of coupling converter vans for Grantham's appearance at the NEC this weekend. Since I won't change all of my stock from tension locks or three links to those expensive and no-more-realistic American Kadee couplings that are more common on the layout, we need a good supply of go-between vehicles!Most subjects, models and techniques covered in this thread are now listed in various categories on page1

Very interesting. Looks like that tender, although post-war in that picture, has had a rear coal plate fitted. Water pick-up gear presumably removed by that date, if ever fitted.manna wrote:G'day Gents

unless you have carefully hidden the "bulge" it is not visible in those photos graeme so well done.
As for the pre grouping thing, you know you want to spend the next few years going back in time with all your relevant stock
