Slow progress at the moment, work is really getting in the way.
Managed to get the solebars painted on the 2nd D113 and some teak applied to the other side of the 1st D113.

Plus I got a reply from Fox transfers....not bad, from an initial email back in early July.

Well done to both shops... real customer service, and the mail did their bit too. So I now have replacment lamps for the ones I fitted.
Be warned. East Kent Models are closing down in a couple of weeks, so grab now if you need some. 50p per lamp.

Thanks Mike, I ordered a number when I got them.
Not much has been done since the last bit some weeks ago...and not much will happen for a bit as work and family have all my time at the moment.
Still I managed to do a bit of initial teak painting done the other week on the D113.

I found out the article I was after on the J72 was published in the Nov 1996 & Dec 1996 editions of Model Railway Illustrated, if anyone has these and could send me a copy (mine lost) it would be greatly appreciated

No its not its going mail order only shop is closing on 27 th October . Mail order starts on 12th November via

I have retrieved the MORILL J72 articles from the loft. PM me if you want scanned copies. I've saved the scans as JPEGs but to get reasonable quality of the photos, I've had to crank up the resolution a bit so the files as quite large.

Surprised that they are not using a warmer undercoat beneath the scumble. Hope they realise that there are no knots in teak!

Firstly there is a little board in the NRM describing all the steps the LNER used to achieve the imitation teak finish. This describes using a buff base coat. 1623 is painted with Williamson's buff undercoat. Anyway it was only a trial to see what the material was like to apply.

Secondly how much teak have you handled? Amongst the photos is one of a piece of new teak panel for comparison on which there are some small knots visible. Larger knots whilst rare, do occur. Do you think teak trees grow without branches?

BTW virtually every teak panel that has gone on a carriage anywhere in the UK, in the last twenty or so years has been through our hands. So I think LNERCA knows what teak looks like.

My comment about knots was slightly tounge in cheek. Certainly teak has some knots, although not as many as most timber types, but the LNER specified that external teak panels with evidence of knots should not be used. There was a directive to this effect in the notebook of the Carriage Shop foreman at the Plant certainly still extant when the Royal Train brake 109 was refurbished there in 1976.

Up until 1938/9 the undercoat on ersatz teak vehicles was hand mixed (as were most rolling stock finishes) I have not seen the sample in the NRM but did see the pattern in Doncaster paint shop which originated from the time of the Metro Cammell full brakes of 1928 (from meory). This was definately a warmer shade than pure buff.
