Re: Atlantic's works inc. RTRconversions. "Now wear the T-sh
I can but bow to the quality of the modelling Sir Morgan!
That etch may arrive just in time for me to try out the saddle sides in preference to the plastic ones I've just added to the as yet unpainted, but at long last largely complete, Wolf of Badenoch for "Chalky". I don't normally bother to even offer-up the nameplates vac pipes and couplings until the loco is well-on into the painting process. I'm glad I decided to fit them temporarily in this case, to add visual impact ready for a preview appearance at Bishop Auckland this Saturday, as I'd been planning to leave the ejector pipe in its ex-factory Bachmann position. I soon discovered that I had to raise it about 1.5 mm to accommodate the nameplate in anything like a prototypical position......

I think in 58 it did for a while Mick.
In fact so did a number of other Thompson machines I've a colour photo of both Sun Castle and Thane of Fife with red nameplates.
Can't decide it I like red plates my self.

Choice of the owner-to-be. I don't know what colour they should be.

No time for notes until tomorrow, but pictures for now. Those with inside knowledge may not need the notes.....

For Flaman speed recorder on A1/1 etc
This bracket and drive crank are from the trial version of Morgan's new etch, illustrated a page or two previously, where you can also see his example of the bracket in bare brass. I found the etched parts fairly fiddly to assemble, not because of any lack of means of location at the joints (which Morgan has thoughfully provide in the form of interlocking slots) but rather beacuse I was trying to work with fingers, thumbs and a standard soldering iron rather than setting things up to make my life easier! No matter how you do the job, you'll proably want to file off some of the folded tabs after all is soldered up, to give a neat appearance.
The Flaman gearboxes and driveshaft are not provided. Those wanting the full outfit could either use some or all of the parts for certain versions of the Hornby A4, or make up their own representation from say wire, tube, crankpin washers and small brass sections. The option then is open to copy the arrangement as now on Mallard (which Hornby seem to have done) or consult old photogtraphs and Doncaster drawings at the NRM which appear to show that the original "primary gearbox" fitted to the base of the A-bracket was not of the type now seen on Mallard.

BTH speedo for A2/3 etc.
As above, fiddly to assemble but nice when finished. Don't solder the outboard stay in place in its slot in the side of the baseplate when the unit is on the bench, as you have to fit the speedo bracket onto the loco around the reach rod for the reversing gear.

Step bracket and frame strengthener. Another item from Morgan's new etch. This allows the front steps to be fitted correctly leaving open space behind the buffers, helps to support the potentially vulnerable front frame extensions, and unlike a simple stretcher fitted across the frames to carry both sets of steps, these "separate each side" brackets do not box in space behind the buffer beam where the coupling hook may be secured. This makes it easy to fit or remove the coupling as necessary.

Etch for saddle sides
Fitted
The plain sides of this saddle overlay may actually be about a millimetre shallower than they really needs to be. This may not be the problem that we thought it to be, as I'm fairly convinced that it is just as easy (if not easier) to fill the gap that is left at the bottom edge of the saddle, compared to having to trim back the brass had it turned out to be a little too tall.

The A2/2 looks first rate. I'm comparing that to all the effort on my DJH version.
Re: Atlantic's works inc. RTRconversions. "Now wear the T-sh
Simply great workmanship, I'm really looking forward for more.

EDIT: Did the A2/2s ever wear BR express passenger blue?
(Apparently the forum software can't make it's mind up what is a post and what is a PM)
