This is some seriously innovative modelling. I really cannot wait to see the finished article.

Ay up!
The colour was described as "Admiralty Dark Sea Grey."
I sent a request to the NRM who sent me the BS No (of little use) but then sent an RGB No for a digital imaging package. I had Photoshop then so tapped it in, printed off a square and took it to Wigan show to find the correct colour. It was much darker than you think.
My day was made in March when I took 10000 to BRM's last Harrogate show to run on Engine Shed Road. An old chap who said he was a former Darlington apprentice told me that the colour was just right. Most of them are too pale.

Re: Loco/vans/brakes workbench - another cunning RTR convers
I tried to put up a reply at lunchtime today, but my web-link died after I tried to submit the un-saved text
In essence, I was going to say that whilst I have no current plans to do the Hush-Hush in original form, I can see how nice the idea of a one piece (unlikely) or simple kit-version accurate body in resin might be. It would go straight onto Hornby super-detail pacific running gear, with a new set of rear frames and rear truck, also using the appropriate Hornby eight-wheeled tender, unaltered. Tempting, but I have no time to tackle such a thing for the foreseeable future.
I see the old chestnut of "what shade of grey" has stimulated debate again!

Re: Loco/vans/brakes workbench - another cunning RTR convers
Yes that old question about the colour. I posted this on the W1 thread last year it might as well be repeated again out of interest.
I met by chance Bill Brown at the NRM, who wrote the book on the hush hush loco and I asked him about the colour of the loco, he said that the colour was lead grey with a little bit of black (and only a little bit) plus turpentine and several coats of lacquer. He states that when the LNER were producing a poster of the loco, Gresley sent a memo to the publicity department stating the make up of the colour so they could get it right. This memo is in the NRM.
Bill said he gave all the info to L. H. Loveless and his model is an exact replica of the livery hush hush carried.
I saw the model at York show this year and it is very dark grey colour.

The lighting around the LHL stand at York was appalling, but here's my photo of the LHL W1:

Re: Loco/vans/brakes workbench - another cunning RTR convers
I'm lucky enough to have a Loveless Hush Hush, she is pretty epic. I would describe the colour as a darker grey with a hint of green. Mr Loveless was telling me that the Darlington apprentices model that has featured a number of times on this board is not in its original colour, although evidence of what is believed to the original colour was found on the model. He was telling me that an attempt was being made to find the funding to restore the locomotive to its original condition, this was of course the very same paint specification used on the real locomotive. What was not realized before where the extra ingredients, mentioned in Dave's post, added to the lead BS no grey noted by Blink Bonny.
Mr Loveless was of the opinion that there is more hot air blown out over the correct colours of railway locomotives and stock, mainly based on anecdotes or memory, when in reality most paint specifications and BS numbers are in existence and will allow you to recreate the original colours if you wish to do so. That has been his approach and I think the results are pretty spectacular.

Re: Grouping the colour
German railway colours also tend to be based on set pantone "RAL" numbers.
Thing is, memory is an elusive thing, and is coloured (pun not intended) by the surrounding environment and available light. I once read that even the countless particles of dust in the air can affect the way that an individual views a colour. For example, I've had terrible trouble with the blue shade of the Prototype Deltic - some photos suggest a light aquamarine blue, whilst others suggest darker. Worse still, I can't open the bottle of (Railmatch) ProtoDeltic Blue that I bought a while ago, as I think the paint has solidified......
And of course, colours fade.

Re: Loco/vans/brakes workbench - another cunning RTR convers
Returning to the theme....
Although still lacking handrails, lamp irons, vacuum pipe, coupling shackle, guard irons and no doubt some other oddments, besides completion of the framing, plating and buffer beam shape, here's the current state of the front of the Baldwin, with a couple of GC signature touches added: Square buffer bases plus a smokebox door wheel-and-handle.
Following a certain amount of nudging I've received over the months (despite being a mere OO mortal), I shall be at S4N in Wakefield tomorrow afternoon by the way. I may have the odd loco about my person too, if I can sneak them in past the gauge-police .

If you can't spot me, Gordon Luck (Fish Dock Road) should be able to point you in the direction of this "OO gauge fifth-columnist".

My next challenge for Atlantic is a genuine LNER loco (Well from an Flying Scotsman luggage label). Its Thompsons little known rebuild of a Riddles WD.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.

52D, are you sure that's not just a P2/2? (Though it looks like a cross between an early A4 and P2/2, what with the valances and single chimney)

Re: Loco/vans/brakes workbench - another cunning RTR convers
I wasnt sure if it was meant to be a P2 or an artists impression of an A4 but added it as a 2-8-0 for fun. It would be interesting to know what year its from, perhaps it was to coincide with the Launch of the P2s.

Looks like a 2-8-2 to me, but the wheelset under the cab seems to be shaded...
Anyhow, you really think Thompson would re-/build something that looked even remotely Gresley-ish?
