There are some real classics in there - thanks again Graeme!
I've just spent the last hour copying the B2 thread into Word. I have no intention of losing these if the forum gets "spring-cleaned".

Although it was extra work of a rather frustrating nature, I was actually quite pleased to be able to re-establish links to those items. I do hope they don't get moved again or further reduced.

Thanks for the links.
Very interested in the R1 Mick is making in brass. Does anyone know if he has finished it yet or has a link to further progress.
Regards
Richard

He breezed past me at Doncaster at the weekend, but I didn't see him again to speak to. He probably hasn't done much more to it. He's very approachable - drop him a PM and I'm sure you'll get a very helpful reply. Or if you're not too far away go and see him on his stand at Hull show - he's always good for a cup of tea and a chat.

Re: Loco/vans/brakes workbench - another cunning RTR convers
A1/1 update. Despite getting good results (with the aid of beginner's luck( when using heat to straighten the cab and tender sides on the first conversion, I had a very annoying and frustrating time trying to repeat the process for the second loco last night. I now have a lot more work to do to redeem the situation. Because of the risks, I would not advise anybody else to try the heat-straightening approach. I think it is better to conced the need to patch-paint or blow-in the repaired edges of the side sheets, which should present no problem in view of the fairly good match between Humbrol 195 and Hornby BR green, plus the presence of lining to provide an edge at which to hide the change in the paint.
In future I would proceed as follows.
Cab: Cut back curved sidesheets to the vertical line denoted by the handrail holes. Either restore beading and leave it at that, ignoring the small amount of curve that remains and painting only the beading, or firstly "key" the residue of the curved face, add filler, blend in locally only (without straying across the "main" face of the sidesheet or the lining), add beading, then paint to match, up to the vertical edge of the panel lining.
Tender: Body off chassis. Cut curved parts of sidesheets off back to a vertical edge, but NOT all the way back to the front off the tank. Add a new flat rectangle of plastikard to create the straight front of the sidesheet, plus a reinforcing / overlapping thin layer of plastikard across the inside face of the joint. Blend (only locally again), tidy edge shape, add beading, and paint, again only to the edge of the panel lining.
In both cases of course, drill and refit handrails.

re Tender
I cut a slot in the back of the curve and gently pulled it straight. Added poly cement and wedged until set, then filled the slot. Its not perfect but near enough.
I was repainting anyway so that hid a lot of the "work".

Hmm, there's a thought. I also now think I know why I fouled-up during my second attempt to use heat, or putting it another way I know why it worked better the first time

Re: Loco/vans/brakes workbench - another cunning RTR convers
Can I take you back to pages 21/2/3 of this thread - the 4-8-2?
I have a spare A1/3/4 chassis block and loads of spare red wheels , and was wondering just how tricky it is to cut these chassis blocks?
Rather than using brass sheet I have in mind using a second chassis block and grafting the back of one onto the front of another.
If I could make the cut so crudely defined by the outside of the "Tippex" line in the above image, then make a matching cut in a second chassis but including the rear axle slot, and bring the two together.......
I'm just thinking I might preserve the cartazzi mounting that way.

Re: Loco/vans/brakes workbench - another cunning RTR convers
The blocks are not at all easy or quick to cut, but I can see that if you cut where you have marked, and then cut to matching lines but further forward in you second block, you could splice the two together, but you'd need a means of making a stong joint that correctly aligns the two blocks "in all planes" and sets the spacing of the extra axle "dead-on".

Re: Loco/vans/brakes workbench - another cunning RTR convers
In an attempt to stay within Imageshack's free hosting limits and thus avoid paying for extra space (Never! So calm that wallet down NT..) or loss of some of my more important &/or cherished image uploads at the end of this month, I have been deleting some of the images from my workbench thread, trying to stick to those that don't matter quite so much. The images showing development and assembly of the A2/3 conversions have already been removed, as I can now supply what is necessary by e-mail to those who need the information. Quite a number of others have gone too. I'm having a break from the boring job of deleting images for a while now, but next to be deleted or severely thinned out will be the K4 conversion, maybe the 4-8-2, possibly parts of the W1 saga, and some of the coverage of the brake vans and fridge vans from early 2011 may have to go too. If you want to download copies, now is the time to do it, before I get at 'em.......

OK, K4 and 4-8-2 copied, most of W1 already done, phew!
