Sand Houses

Post by mossie »

Does anyone know where I can find scale drawings for GNR sand house. I need to build one for my engine shed layout.

I have found one for Leeds in Great Northern Railway Engine Sheds, Vol.1, but it does not have a scale associated with it.

Regards

Richard

Richard,

I have your drawing on page 129 of the above book. To the right of the door you will see some brick courses drawn in. These will be standard imperial bricks, 9" x 3" x 41/2". The courses are 0.5 mm wide in the drawing, so the door scales 7'6" which is possible. I would say that your drawing is 2mm :1ft, and spot on for your N scale layout. Lucky or not?

Thanks for your reply. Did not think about counting the courses, but now having thought about the bricks I will have to factor in a 1/2" of mortar between the courses and add it to the height, I think?.

So that would make .5mm 3 1/2", then the door height would be roughly 9' 4" in the centre. Would that be possible for a door height.

The layout I am building is 00 track and stock with the buildings being 4mm to the foot. I have nearly finished scratch building the concrete coaling tower and the sand house is the next project.

Thanks for your help.

Richard
