GNR Coach buffers
Evening All
I'm currently building a batch of 4mm coaches including a couple of ex-GNR 58'1" (D121 and D183). These are etches only from the late John Fozard.
Does anyone know of a source of buffers suitable for these coaches? The heads are of the "race-track" pattern i.e. oval but with parallel top and bottom edges.
All info welcome.

Re: GNR Coach buffers
I've used the LYR ones on the list Mick links to in the past. They come with a separate oval head which you attach to the sprung buffer, so you can file it to shape first.
I acquired a set of 3 carriages including the two diagrams you have, which John himself had built. He fitted sprung round buffers.

Thanks Gents
I think I'll go with the LYR ones.
Thanks again.

Re: GNR Coach buffers
Good afternoon, just found this thread. The 51L buffers mentioned above are out of stock, but I asked Andrew about them their similarity to GNR heads and he advised they weren't that close - these are the overlays - https://www.wizardmodels.ltd/shop/wagons/uc029/
I used the NNR Quad-art as the comparison. He did say there was the possibility of a GNR specific overlay being added to the range, so if anyone does want some, now is the time to show an interest

Re: GNR Coach buffers
There is also a proper alternative.
Because of the upset at Shapeways, Mike Trice has made much of his artwork available freely on the GNRS site.
You can just search for Great Northern Society, you don't need to join, just down load the relevant file, then your only problem
is finding someone local with a 3d resin printer, but at least they are accurate.
Thanks Mike

Re: GNR Coach buffers
That's incredibly generous of Mike.
I have no clue with 3D printers mind.

Re: GNR Coach buffers
There is also Emardee or Model Railway Developments who also do a few types of pre grouping sprung buffers. Don’t think they have a working website but they do have a stand at some of the more finescale exhibitions
Re: GNR Coach buffers
I am unable to make it to exhibitions, and I have tried a few times to buy from the proprietor but he seems very reluctant to sell. Maybe it is me but I am always polite.Wolf of Badenoch wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2024 11:11 pm There is also Emardee or Model Railway Developments who also do a few types of pre grouping sprung buffers. Re: GNR Coach buffers
As far as I understand it, MRD relies on MJT for sprung buffers, and MJT haven't produced any for about three years due to "manufacturing difficulties".Wolf of Badenoch wrote: ↑Sun Dec 08, 2024 11:11 pm There is also Emardee or Model Railway Developments who also do a few types of pre grouping sprung buffers. I keep asking about GWR sprung coach buffers, but they're never available despite being shown on the exhibition stand.
Sprung buffers for coaches and wagons have been increasingly difficult to find over the last few years, and I don't think things will improve.

Re: GNR Coach buffers
I believe (GK can confirm?) that this all goes back to Colin Seymour not currently being able to produce 16" steel buffer heads until a machine is repaired. He seems to be everyone's supplier.
Re: GNR Coach buffers
From what I understand, the manufacturer for MJT, whoever it is/was was unable to cut a square enough shoulder for the spring to butt against so it would jam.

Re: GNR Coach buffers
As much as I was told by Colin Seymour (2-3 years ago, possibly at the first post-lockdowns EM show at Kettlethorpe, Wakefield) when I last wanted some turned heads that were shown as "out of stock" everywhere, was that if I wanted a couple of thousand I could have them quickly, but as I wanted only a dozen or less then I was entirely dependent on somebody else ordering enough for stock to make it economic for him to set up and run his machine.
A few months later I noticed that Wizard models had stock again so I grabbed some. Availability was brief.

Re: GNR Coach buffers
We'll have to find other ways of springing our buffers as it seems pretty clear there won't be any more.Atlantic 3279 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2024 10:58 am As much as I was told by Colin Seymour (2-3 years ago, possibly at the first post-lockdowns EM show at Kettlethorpe, Wakefield) when I last wanted some turned heads that were shown as "out of stock" everywhere, was that if I wanted a couple of thousand I could have them quickly, but as I wanted only a dozen or less then I was entirely dependent on somebody else ordering enough for stock to make it economic for him to set up and run his machine.
