Tom,

May I suggest that you find yourself an Ian Allan Combined Volume for the mid 1950s. There are plenty about and they make great reading.

All these sort of questions would then be easily answered.

Seconded. Here is what yours will tell you when you buy one (I suggest eBay, where an "Allan ABC" search returned 359 items):

41280, 41320 - Ivatt 2MT 2-6-2T
42769 - 42897 (inclusive) - Horwich "Crab" 2-6-0
63578 - 63901 (inclusive) - 01/04 2-8-0
64375, 64420 - J11 0-6-0
64739 - 64955 (inclusive) - J39 0-6-0
D3859 - D3861 (inclusive) - BR standard class 08 0-6-0 diesel shunter

Get bidding!

Never mind get bidding its a case of waiting till the end of the month and seeing if I can get a good price for buying Bachmann 9fs in bulk are any of the 9fs crosleys. Ill make a start by repainting my J39 into BR early from LNER as 1996.

I'm not sure whether you're asking whether any of Bachmann's forthcoming models will feature the Franco-Crosti (N.B. spelling  ) boiler, or whether any of the engines you listed in your opening post were so equipped. Anyway, the answer is the same in both cases - no.

92020 to 92029 inclusive were the 9Fs which were fitted with this set-up. They were all allocated to 15A Wellingborough, according to the 1959 Locoshed Book.

This http://www.dself.dsl.pipex.com/MUSEUM/L ... crosti.htm site has an excellent technical description and some very interesting pictures of extraordinary Belgian, Italian, German and Irish engines fitted with the system.

Thanks that makes the true allocation easier converting a Bachmann 9f the Crosti would be difficult for my primitive mind lol.

If you are concerned about getting the detail variations right on your model 9Fs, you will need a Combined Volume to find out which ones had double chimneys or mechanical stokers. It will also tell you with which of 4 types of BR1 tender they were fitted.

It would be fairly helpful to sort out the 8 sub classes of 01/04, but you really need photographs of the actual one you are modelling to get them right.

I think that you need an Ian Allan Combined Volume for your chosen year.

I'd have thought that the presence of an exotic visitor wouldn't be difficult to justify. Something being transferred cross-Region, or working a special of some sort (football? pigeon fanciers? troops? holiday excursion?) develops a hot box and comes in for attention.

And in any case, as Richard correctly observes:
richard wrote:There are two rules to model railways:
1.) Have fun!
2.) It is my damn railway, and I'll do what I want :-)
So if you want to assume that the Channel Tunnel was actually completed in 1920 and visiting SNCF locomotives work through services from Paris to the Midlands, who's to stop you? :D

Richard,

You imagine SNCF stock working through a 1920s Channel Tunnel up to Annesley.

As the GCR was built to Continental Loading Gauge, this would be quite possible if you could also assume that a new Continental gauge line had built from Marylebone to Dover.

However you would have to scratch build your 4mm scale Continental stock, unless of course, you use HO British outline stock with Continental HO.

Yes, I'd vaguely recalled that the GCR was built to the so-called "Berne" loading gauge. However, as you point out, the contrast between 3.5mm and 4mm to the foot scale models would probably be quite marked.

I'm assuming that had any of the early schemes to build a rail tunnel between England and France come to fruition, it would have been electrified from the outset or very early on as the technology became available.

Anyway, all of this would tend to suggest that if Tom wants to park a Jubilee on his model of Annesley, then that's what he should do!
