LNER coach fabrics and upholstery 1930s

Post by 4608 »

I am trying to find out the identity of third-class coach fabrics used in the inter-war period for corridor/vestibuled carriages. As I review Michael Harris’s books on LNER coaches I find reference to three types as follows:

1. Until 1932 - Fawn rep with brown buttons, brown leathercloth armrests & piping. Which I take as being as illustrated below in the photo of fawn rep circa 1930. The adjacent picture from the corridor brake 3rd is much lighter, probably due to the lighting

Can anyone confirm these are pre-1932 and give an opinion as to which picture is closest to the actual fabric shade please?

As to post 1932. Harris mentions two types used then:

2. (With intermediate armrests) Special brown moquette
3. (Without armrests) Ordinary brown moquette

Can anyone enlighten me as to what these two patterns were? Were they the same material pattern as before in moquette instead of rep or a new pattern? Only other pictures I can find of third fabrics are given further below.

Any help would be appreciated here.

Thank you. That leads me to believe that the bottom right picture is Holdsworth's Brown 721/8548 and that this is the "ordinary brown moquette". Perhaps the bottom left picture is the special brown moquette?

I would only be guessing :(

My suggestion would be to contact the LNERCA directly?
