These, I understand, were based on an LMS design and from what I can make out from my book on LMS wagons were fairly accurate models (well good enough for me)! I would like to know what types of load these would have carried (other than steel plate) and wether they would have run in a train with other rolling stock or in untimetabled special trains. I'm asking as they are an impressive sight when painted correctly and would add a bit of interest to the run of the mill goods trains, especially if unusual loads could be justified.

These were used for any thing what is large and tall this can be a transformer, an engine, if too high take the wheels off, boats, large machine parts etc.

If in gauge it can run in a normal train and in the case of a very heavy load normaly next to the brake van.

Only in the case of oversize loads that it ran as an Sunday special when there was no other trains.

Take a look in P Tatlows books or even the GW wagon book they do have examples of well wagons of all types and different loads.

That is a non standard load, must had fun unloading it at the other end ps what happened to it as it would have made a good mess and tool van for a Preserved Railway.

It is certainly an impressive vehicle. I'm not sure why it needed to be so robust.

There is a photograph showing a huge ships propeller on one of these trucks, it overhangs both roads. I think it may be in Humphrey Households " With the L.N.E.R. in the twenties" which is an excellent insight to railway life in those days. The employees even had to pay for the coal for their office stove.

I've heard rumours of an oglo on the ECML between Christmas and new year.. It'll be interesting to see what wagons they can dig up. Gonna be pretty big so i've heard.

It will probably be the usual Salmon wagons with S+C units slightly overhanging or possibly precurved track panels.
Not much else is likely to be carried nowadays.
There is a fascinating example though on one of the FASTLINE Films showing the men slewing a load across a well wagon to pass through a bridge then moving it back again.
