Flying Scotsman Repairs

Post by Mersey508138 »

I have read in this months Steam Railway Magazine that A3 Flying Scotsman had a failure after running a hotbox on the middle driving axle.

The story also mentions that she went back to Riley and Sons where her overhaul for a return to service was carried out and where the axle repair is taking place.

I was wondering if anyone has any update on how the work is progressing on the repair.

The museum tweeted something about the failure at the time. I think they had to cancel some runs on the Nene Valley?

There were pictures on Facebook at the end of last week of it on the move, so it must be back in one piece.

Steam Railway issue 473.

No, she was taken to the Nene Valley Railway where the offending centre axle was dropped and returned for repairs to Riley & Sons.

She failed to head charter services for Steam Dreams onward to Norwich from Ely; and the October 21st round trip from Norwich via the Bacon Factory Curve to Westerfield before reversing to Ipswich and returning to Norwich and then the final working to King's Cross later the same day (return always scheduled to be diesel-hauled).

70013 Oliver Cromwell was proposed as alternative steam motive power but was undergoing scheduled maintenance at Southall.

The latter two of these runs have been rescheduled for November 11, when hopefully this time I will be able to see her pass by twice during the morning: http://www.eadt.co.uk/news/flying-scots ... -1-5267824

Despite urgent repairs to an injector to avoid her being failed at the last minute, Flying Scotsman pulled the rescheduled Norwich-Ipswich and return charter for Steam Dreams with no problems, running closely to time and with the bonus of a slow approach on the return run into Diss and an extended stop for filling with water.

At my nearby level crossing Network Rail workers had fitted extended barrier rails mounted off the pandrol clips but they did not close the gap between the barrier posts and anyway they were half barriers leaving plenty of access. Fortunately British Transport Police officers arrived (by car, how else?) and rapidly persuaded the half-wits who had entered onto the railway land and leaning on those barrier rails to remove themselves, the officers remaining until the train had cleared the section.

Lots of waving between passengers and spectators as the train slowly moved past, quite different to the earlier Up run to Ipswich which was performed at reasonable speed and accompanied by a wonderful exhaust beat.
