Yes Union of South Africa's current tender came off the W1, but thereis the odd A4 with only the one tender like 4901, which had 5641 all it's life.

On boilers, they were taken off overhauled and if not needed put in the pile which is where Yeadons refers to them as spare, otherwise they were put straight back on the next engine, and if you look at the history of some of them like 8906, it was new to A4 2510 Quicksilver, came off, then went back on with 8908 in between,m 8906 was spare, it does get difficult when BR renumbered them, but some had the same boiler 3 times!
And they did swap between classes, as 29281 came off A3 60099 on to A4 4482(60023)

In 1970 I visited Doncaster Plant on business and met the Site Services Manager, Gary Wilkes. He showed me a row of pacific boilers outside the erecting shop where Deltics were being overhauled. These were spare boilers that had been repaired and retubed in the normal way.

They were waiting for instructions as to what to do with them. The next time I went, they had all gone.

Yep, she certainly is back - and sounds as good as she looks. A credit to all who worked on her - well done guys!

Here's a few pics of her official arrival at Pickering with the welcome banner and of her on route - from on board the train.

Lovely pics Geoff, especially like the first one in Northdale.

See http://www.nymr.fotopic.net/c1047258.html for more pics of her.

Great pictures of a fine locomotive, the first one and the one from from on board the train are especially good.

Now that's a train that should be seen be seen the length and breadth of the east coast mainline, the seven teaks make it such an awesome sight and a very nice period piece.

I suppose I can but dream eh?

Sawdust,

If you take a close look at the beading on the lower panel of the Gresley carriages in the photograph you will see that Doncaster Carriage Works put it in the wrong place. The correct position is shown on the Hornby OO model of the carriage and they must be right because they have made far more of them than the LNER. Also Hornby were able to "improve" on the curve of the tumblehome of the lower panel.

A photograph of a Hornby carriage with the beading in the "correct" position is shown clearly in the Rails catalogue at http://www.railssheffield.co.uk/product ... ockID=3369
Clearly Hornby thought that they had "done their research properly" and consequently everybody else, including Ian Kirk, the LNER and the NYMR, must be wrong.

Do you know, I became fed up with hornby ringing me up, wanting me to be their unpaid researcher. Every time I asked what are you going to do to help us in return they went quiet. Some people seemed to think having the models made was some sort of honour and lost sight of the fact that hornby was going to make a lot of money from them.

All the best.

Well I think it's probably the first seven coach LNER train hauled by an A4 since the mid 1960s. unless anyone knows better.

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the tardy replies - been busy dodging the rain squalls - trying to get the baseboards re-laid on the garden rail!! Hopefully, next week!!

Thanks for the kind comments on the pics. It certainly was a beautiful site - and a lovely sound - they've certainly made a superb job of her. AND, she IS my fav loco. My dear ol' dad bought me one of Hornby DublO SNG and tinplate teaks way back in 1950!! Ever since then it's been "my engine"! It still sits on my bookshelf - in it's original LNER blue!! Alas, the tinplate teaks went many years ago!

I remember talking to the guys in the carriage sheds who were working on the brake open third and they said that they would have 7 teaks ready in time for the first run!! AND they have quite a few more to do yet.

As regards the beading - I shall have to have a word with the lads in the carriage works and tell them to get the drawing that was signed off by HNG himself, in 1933, altered to hornbys drawings!!!

You'd think the great man would get his own carriages right, wouldn't you??!!!

Regards,

GeoffB

Well Geoff I have a drawing in front of me now (dated 1934) and although it is signed

'H.N.Gresley
8.3.1934'

After the date the Initials 'OB' appear, this is the case for most drawings i've seen. As for the beading don't worry I was taught where to put it by Les Browning who started at Doncaster as an apprentice of the GNR and went on to become a chargehand coach builder and one of two men who oversaw the construction of the Coronation stock amongst others.

All the best.
