Just had a sudden thought that had never occurred to me: How do they drop the wheels? Lifting the entire frame or engine seems a big job - especially from something like Green Arrow which still has its boiler/etc attached.

There seems to be a wheel drop in the centre track, but I've never seen how these things work!

Yes and a drop seems complicated, doesn't it? Probably mechanically easier though.

Yes, easier than lifting Green Arrow just for one wheel set!

Its Simple:

Basically they push the loco over the wheel drop and stop when the affected wheelset is on the drop.

then they remove everything to allow the wheels to come out then drop the wheelset down below the loco. Then a piece of temperary track is placed over the hole so the loco can be moved away form the drop.

then the temperary piece of track is removed then the wheels are raized and rolled away. then the process is repated for the other wheels.

That's the sort of idea I had, and if you look at the pictures, you can see the yellow bars around the hole, and the metal plates that are at the side of the track for a walk way.
