There is a fine gantry at Wansford on the Nene Valley Railway (an ex LNWR station......) and I attach some photos that may help to show details of how they worked.

I believe the NVR have acquired or may acquire the original Wansford building http://www.nvr.org.uk/wansford-station-appeal which is in shocking internal condition. It was in one of the current railway mags.
