I am looking for any images of RIFTS HOUSE FARM .SALTBURN -BY-THE-SEA
The history of it is ...
That during the building of the line from Redcar to Saltburn, my wife's
.g.g.g.granddad, mark Garbutt lived at rifts house farm in saltburn
born 1819.... d1888.
During those years , the railway workers lived at the farm ,while laying the track .Once they had finished the work , the farm was demolished ,making way for the line to curve to wards Loftus.
Her G.G.G.Granddad owned all the fields to the edge of Saltbrun, and in so by selling them off , it was the beginning of the line ,
When it was removed , the family were moved to Hilda Place in Saltburn to live .
I have seen a few old photos of Saltburn on the forum , and so I am still looking .
The farm can be seen ,just south of the line ,that ran in to Zetland Hotel.

A bit of history for members on the forum.....

Regards Jim

sorry cant help , only that the map is a newer one , as the map on the deeds on parchment for the jewell streets around the same era gives the North Sea as the German Ocean .

Finding any photo of the time of the line being laid , is as rare as "hens teeth " and if any thing should surface ,I would be over the moon.

The book " East Cleveland Photographic Memories" by Roger Darnton ISBN 1-84546-349-8 page 44 has a photograph of Rifts Wood Mill taken in 1891. It shows the mill manager's house. In the centre foreground there is a large haystack, to left of which is a set of what appears to be farm buildings, although, of course they may only relate to the mill, itself. Is this of interest to you?

Also on pages 54-55 there is a map showing Saltburn by the Sea and surrounding areas - 1899-1913.

The photographs in the book are from the Francis Frith Collection - www.francisfrith.co.uk. This collection might have what you are looking for.

This edition of the book was published exclusively for the Guisborough Book Show. Try them for a copy.

Hi Scottiedog ,

The family that lived at Rifts wood Mill , were relatives to the farmer at RIFTS HOUSE FARM , my wife has them in her family tree.

Many thanks for your reference work .
