I have scanned these photos ,in hope they improve there appearance ,unfortunately this is my first attempt to take photos from my train spotting days.

The shutter speed ,did not help taking moving locos.....

The last two of that day ........I have more of photo's Deltic,s and A4 entering and leaving York station.

I hope these bring back those lost memories ,of time spent on those platforms

Yes, excellent nostalgia. They are the type of photos that capture the flavour of everyday spotting trips, where the sun did not always shine and the locos were invariably rather filthy.

It is great that you have chosen to share them with us, because all to often these early Box Brownie snaps are hidden away in cupboards and then accidentally thrown out, and never see the light of day. I find it rather interesting that even as early as 59/60 the EE Type 4s seem to have been relegated to fitted goods trains. Maybe the ER had already noticed their lack of power when coupled to 12/13 carriage expresses of the time?

Thanks for the pics. Wild Swan was the first A4 that I copped at Copley Hill in the mid fifties. She must have been the least photographed A4 of all.

Just to point out that it is not two Deltics (which were Type 5). The one on the left is an EE Type 4, later to become class 40.

Hi Strang Steel,

Here is a couple of " Sulzer Type 4" Peak class diesel locomotives ,standing near the coaling plant at Holbeck sheds.
At the time I thought they looked very clean ,but nothing more .
After looking at there history , they must have been from the last batch to have been made .
The date would be around 1962/63....about the time I stopped visiting Leeds train spotting.

D133 would have been one of the last class 45s to be built, as they only went as far as D137.

However, another batch were built after that with Brush equipment replacing Crompton Parkinson; they began at D138 and were later classed as 46.

The loco further away, is an older one, and has still not gained the small yellow warning panel.

The headcode panel/box arrangements give these locos away, at least in the early years. The earlier 45s had two boxes either side of the nose ends, but these were moved into the middle for a neater appearance (but were still two separate boxes) on the last few 45s.

On the 46s the headcode box was smartened up even further into one 4-character central affair.

I hope that makes sense.

During my days at York , this shed was on the books for a "cop" .....many a saddle tank .
