The LNER Encyclopedia

I have been asked by a workmate to find out where this is. The notes say that it is The Tyneside Rover on 4th September 1971. I think it may be Ferryhill but need some confirmation. Anybody help please?

Had a look at the itinerary http://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/70s/710904sl.html and it is hard to square it with any NE location. The canopy reminds me of the GCR one at Loughborough Central so my guess would be GCR. Can't recognise the large warehouse though it looks a bit like Huddersfield.

I did not think there was dmu s of that type based at s gosforth , they did visit now and then on specials for servicing , nor can thinkof any local station that fits the picture

I think Pinza could be correct with Huddersfield, east bound platform

The Warehouse is too close to the platform. No wagon lift, No overbridge in the background, Should be space for more tracks than on view and I think the platform is also slightly curved at Huddersfield.

With the shadows would the East bound platform get that strong a light?

Just looked on the sixbellsjunction site too, the tour is listed there and the headcode on the DMU is correct.

It started and finished at Newcastle Central and covered a lot of lines.

Looked in the contemporary SLS Journals. Unfortunately, and unlike the R.O., the Journal does not report on railtours and only announces them as 'forthcoming'. However, a possible clue in the advert. for the event is that it lists reversal points, and these are Blaydon, Blackhill and Ouston Jct.. It might be expected that the train would pause long enough for photos at these places although I accept that this might not have taken place in a platform. I would also suggest that a lot of the tour was possibly over freight-only lines, limiting the possibilities.

Another possible clue for the Sherlock Holmes (or Insp Cluseau) amongst us is that perhaps the sun is about at its highest for a September day suggesting that it was in the early part of the tour. Morpeth might have been reached about 12.30.

Travelling on the present, basic in terms of track & infrastructure, railway I find it difficult to remember what even once very familiar locations were like in the 60's. And I can only vaguely remember Met Camms with 4 character headcodes.

Putting my Columbo raincoat on (he didn't wear a hat) a few things occur to me
1) Its almost certainly an island platform and seems to be undergoing either reconstruction or demolition (wooden cross shaped supports on the left)
2) The warehouse looks as though it is in BR(NE) blue which could mean GNR Leeds area.
3) Was the headcode used on another tour in another year?
4) The signals appear to be painted white but signals in the North East were normally painted grey in 1971
5) Many of the places on the route had been demolished by 1971
6) Of the places on the route which were island platforms it certainly isn't Eaglescliffe, Ferryhill or Consett

Just checked and 2nd December 72 1G11 ran London - Grantham - Skegness http://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/ and the same year there were 3 1G08's.

Not December 72, the sun is too high.

The SLS Tyneside Rover Railtour ran on 4 Sept 1971. It was DMU and according to 6Bells ran as 2G11.

Planned route given in SLS Journal as Newcastle Manors, Percy Main, Blyth & Tyne line to Morpeth, Benton NW Curve, N'castle stn avoiding lines, KEB, Bensham dive-under, Norwood, Blaydon (r), Tyne Yard, Consett, Blackhill (r), Ouston J (r), Durham, Darlington stn avoiding lines, Stockton-O-T, Norton W Junc, Ferryhill, Durham, Newcastle C.

1G11 in Dec '72 was hauled by 359, according to 6Bells. A 3car Met Camm would be an unusual choice for KX to Skeg.

Thats all true but a lot of the trains on SixBells don't have any headcode and it isn't identifiable as an NE station. The only logical conclusion is that it was another 1G11 which ran the same year but on another line, or a 1G11 which ran another year but whose headcode isn't recorded on SixBells.
