Went to the dentists the other day and flicking through the usual offering of out of date magazines (to take my mind off things to come ) I saw this picture. As my name was called I asked the receptionist if I could take the magazine home with me as I wanted the picture.
Coming out 25 minutes later I paid up, but had forgotten about the picture, but as she gave me my receipt she also kindly passed over the neatly trimmed image. I said "chankqew" and put it in my pocket. Not wanting to dribble over the counter to much I made another appointment and left.

Looking through my jacket earlier today I found the crumpled image again, but the photo credit & caption underneath had been cut off.
I have seen a few photographs of Mallard on 3rd July 1938 but not this one.
Has anyone seen it before, and if so is this before or after the record run?

Barkston north Junction.

The picture will have been taken before the record run.

Those taken afterwards are on the platform at Peterborough North.

I think it may be an image by Max Hoather, a Westinghouse employee, who was on the train for the 'brake trials'.

Does anyone know who the guard was? Apparently he was a goods man and was petrified by the experience!

Rather appropriate, really, considering the loco at the other end was preserved by the experience!

That's not the only similarity - presumably both guard and loco scattered bits of detritus from their big ends all over the track...

So the footplate smelt of lavender, while the guard's compartment... didn't?

Hopefully at that speed there'd have been plenty of ventilation!
