Four years since the question was asked and i don’t see any replies so here goes:-
The photo at Exeter St Davids shows 22 Mallard on GWR stock, so not the ACE.
This is the ill fated up pre-test run on Tuesday 27 April 1948.
It departed Plymouth at 0830am and subsequently failed at Savernake with an overheating main bearing. The train was worked forwards to Newbury by 2-6-2T 4563, where 4920 Dumbleton Hall worked the remainder of the journey to Paddington.
Mallard had worked down to Plymouth on the previous days 1.30pm Paddington – Penzance.
