Whilst in the area I headed over to NRM Shildon/Locomotion - thought these LNER related photos would be of interest, especially the Dominion of Canada ones. There was a fair size work force working busily on Dominion of Canada;

Good to see J21 65033 still on public display but I really some hopes are made soon, either to restore it back to static condition (it's in pretty rough shape) if work to restore it to steam is not going to happen

With the moving of some boards it's possible to get a more side-on shot of the ES1 - this was taken by resting the camera on one of the wall beams

Detail of one of the ES1 axleboxes

Nice model of 'Orion', an LNWR 4-4-0

On the right hand side of 1621, the number plate appears to be a hinged flap (the numberplate on the left hand side isn't) - what is it to access?

Before I left the sun was low enough to create some nice sunlight onto the exhibits through the glass wall

Lovely pics - thanks for sharing. Loving DoC. The NER 4-4-0 looks stunning as ever.

I see Duchess of Spamilton is out on the front row :roll: :wink:

Updated pictures of 60010 on facebook now show test fitting of the stainless steel trim. Heritage painting have finished off her cabside crests. They're also getting ready to do a minor repaint of 60009 (now publicy released info as of today)

I don't know exactly what will be entailed with the minor repaint, but that incorrect parabolic curve can be waved goodbye for sure

EDIT: A quick update on 60008;

Spectacle plates have been returned to 'brass' condition
Cab window frames have been stripped of their paint and have been varnished - 60008's never looked better!

I beleive the hinged numberplate on 1621 is to give access to the Westinghouse pump, which is located between the wheels and inside the big combined splasher!

Thanks for the explanation. And yes, SAC Martin, 1621 looks fantastic! One of my favourite locomotives in the National Collection. the perfect Victorian express locomotive

Tender is in blue undercoat with letters fitted for a press visit, the smokebox is stripped down and scaffolding has been erected around the smokebox area to facilitate removal of the chimney and the asbestos around it to allow the single chimney and bell to be fitted. I believe both sets of valance panels are fully fitted with the trim in place, but neither are permenantly fixed yet due to the fact the access hatches are yet to be cut and the inside surfaces of the valancing plates need painting

Let's see if this works...

Aha, it does! The above image and those after it, are from NRM Shildon's facebook page. They've been finding more of these critters under the paint too:

Someone had a sense of humour - when you look at the Shildon Facebook page, there are other animals ground into the locomotive's metal! A scotty dog and a rabbit among them.

Looking at the pictures at the beginning of the post, showing the skirt plating being fitted, I notice they are splitting the rear plate into two sections, a later modification that happened from 4462 onwards. This was obviously done so the complete section didn't have to be removed for access.

At the time the bell was fitted to DoC pictures show that the rear plate was still a single section and I wonder if DoC, or any others that had the one piece plate (2509 - 4498), did ever have it modified. Anyone out there know – seen pictures to confirm this?

Edit - Thursday Morning
I have started a new subject in the Locomotives and Rolling Stock section for people to their answers: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=8397
