I have added some new photos of the preserved A4’s, starting off with some pics kindly given to me by Martin Wood & Micheal Hutton of
60010 Dominion of Canada at Shildon last week

Not sure that these can legitimately be called decals since they are pierced out of solid metal and will be rivetted to the cab and tender. Decals are vinyl as apposed to transfers which are water slide or varnish fixed.

Its just that the size of them when taken in comparison with the whistle next to them they are not that big, i cannot see them that small on the cabside can you?

The letters will be 12 inches high. The standard BR three tone chime whistle is a little over 12 inches high from the bottom of the base to the top of the nut (whistles without the finial) and the Canadian five tone will be considerably taller, so the ratio in the photo is appropriate.

My guess is the letters are ex Bittern when masquerading as 4492 hence the lack of the 8s. I'm sure someone associated with the restoration will confirm that.

On the subject of transfers, decals are the American name for what we call transfers - ask anyone who ever built a Revell plastic kit! Stick on lettering and artwork done in vinyl are invariably known as vinyls.

All that aside, it's good to see 10 and 8 back home. Let's hope they are both restored well and can be returned to their owners as a credit to our preservationists.

What's Dominion of Canada doing here? Is she on loan, or has her previous museum home discarded her? What's the other locomotive?

And I thought I was the only one that still used the word "transfers"! I used to find the word "decals" repulsive

The other locomotive is 60008. Both are here on loan for Mallard's 75th

Are they both to be repainted in LNER Garter Blue with stainless steel letters?

I’m sorry if I have missed this information contained elsewhere on the Forum.

I’m hoping to take the long flight from Aussie over next year.

Hi Steve , update yesterday 24th ...
note the two fat ladies are still missing mr B

Was passing close to Shildon on Thursday so thought I'd pop in and see how things were going!

She now has red wheels, and the first signs of garter blue are starting to appear. The new cabside digits have arrived, but it looks like they haven't been polished yet.

One hopes that Father Christmas is only a temporary attachment!

I've just had a thought. It's very likely all six A4's will have had their cod's mouths open in the past week;

60007 either at Heaton or after return to Grosmont
60008 with her's off at York
60009 after this week's express on Thursday
60010 with her's open at Shildon
60019 at Southall presumingly under a winter inspection - thus the cod's mouth would be open at some point
60022 when I got her's open on Saturday

quick up-date not much happening ( the board room no doubt) , primer to the buffers , touch of blue and red wheels !

As I understand it, the buffers (and a few little bits of the motion) are in primer to keep them good over winter - the primer will be removed and they will be polished up.

No confirmation as I have no strict business regarding it, but it was me that suggested they contact Hosking for the letters, numbers and trim to save on manufacturing, research and cost - therefore it's quite likely. I also suggested they contact the GCR to see if that single chimney was still floating around in the stores at Loughborough, but we'll just have to see on that one.
