The works photos are always great to see. :)

What's not clear in my mind, is whether there was always a works photo of every new/rebuilt engine leaving the works, and what the criteria was for the for the use of workshop grey. :?

Nothing as far as im aware was laid down on the use of works grey, the NER tended to use it quite a lot and the pics would usually be taken at Jarrow Slakes chosen for a neutral background.
I havent been able to pinpoint the exact location but im sure some member will know.

Doncaster did not use works grey, but Darlington did. Doncaster and Darlington photographed all new types plus variants and locos which had been modified in some way. Ground breaking new types were photographed on half plate glass negs but were also photographed on larger plates up to 15" X 12". Hence the excellent photos of Cock O' The North and the new A4s.

As an aside, Graham Farish have announced this loco amongst their first batch of Peppercorn A2s, and in this very livery.
