The LNER Encyclopedia

I found this photocopy in a bundle of material at Ormesby Hall at the weekend. I assume it was research for an abortive project by someone. I'd like to obtain a good copy of the original and so am hoping someone will recognise it and tell me where it was published or what collection it's from.



All the information I have on the back is: '1939 Raven B16 No. 920 Comes off two-track section and takes the slow line.'.

Another photo from the same pile and taken in the same place shows an A8 and was captioned as being a Darlington to Leeds service.

Second vehicle in the consist is a French ferry van as held in the NRM and also on my Workbench.

I am sure I have seen this photo before it is by Neville Stead I believe - hope this helps?

I'm sure I have seen this picture elsewhere too. I also think that it is Thirsk IIRC

just checked Railway Memories No 23, Northallerton, Ripon & Wensleydale, Stephen Chapman, and there are two photographs of the same location at Thirsk, from the Neville Stead collection.

The first is A3 Pacific 60078 Night Hawk, possibly on the Newcastle-Bristol run.

Second is West Hartlepool based Q6 63419, with a York bound coal train in the same spot as your photograph, from the 1950s. It goes on to state that Thirsk lost its goods facilities on 3rd October 1966.

Couple years since this thread was last posted in.

I have an interest in Thirsk pre war, so I wondered if there were further thoughts on this photo, or others like it of Thirsk Station Pre War.

Certainly Thirsk, before the widening through the station, which is behind the overbridge.

The train is heading south, as suggested above.

Yes Tom that is what they did, there is a photo in one of Ben Brooksbank's ECML books, not sure which off hand.

I used to have a few photocopies from the Public Record office and one of them showed a brand new colour light signal with a fluorescent tube for a route indicator while another showed the half demolished Down side buildings.

That's interesting, so in other words....sometime after 1910ish the archers were bricked up, then re opened for the widening in 1943.
Think I need to try and find more photos from before the widening.
