Attached is a photograph of 60121 running without electric lamps, at least at the front end, in response to a point made in another thread (
the-thompson-l1-2-6-4t-tank-locomotives-t3026.html). In fact 60121 appears to be without its turbo-generator too, which should be visible behind the loco's right-hand smoke deflector - compare with 60144.
The photo of 60121 was taken on 17/09/1961 at Eaglescliffe, when my father was on board the
Don-Yor-Dar Flyer railtour; 60144 was photographed at Grantham on 18/04/1963

61070: 60121 is interesting as I have a photograph of its ex-works at Doncaster in 1957 sporting the backing plate for the top lamp, but no electric lamps or generator. Some more Peppercorn A1s and A2s noted without the fitting at times were 60136/146/160/162; 60533/34/35, although some of these engines had formerly carried the fittings . There may have been more. Others carried fittings until withdrawal, though I'm unsure as to how often the equipment was actually used or functioning in normal use.

You can certainly see where they've been! something that I,ve just noticed, there's a small foot step on the smokebox door???? must be for short firemen and the top lamp, must check to see if other class's had them.
