I've suggested he join the forums, but Owen Brison emailed me with the following comment about the above post:

Unless I am very much mistaken, the boiler in question is the original high-pressure
boiler out of Gresley's Hush-Hush Nº 10000. It is stated in Vol 6C of the RCTS
"Locos of the LNER" that this boiler was used as a stationary boiler at Darlington
until 1965. (A pity it didn't end up in York Railway Museum!)

I've looked. I think Owen is right. I've also checked with Yeadon's - the boiler was in use at Darlington from May 1939 to March 1965, and was scrapped on 10th April 1965.

Looks like the image is copyrighted, but it would be worth trying to get a copy. I'll see if this thread kicks up any other information, and I'll try to contact Durham County Council.

Any comments on this photo, was it a C1 being prepared for streamlining?

2859 and 2870 were the two streamlined B17s.

Note the lack of a rear splasher is due to the cab being pretty much over the rear driving wheel.

Yes you're right Richard, the C1s were not renumbered until after 1946. The shape of the radius rod and the inside cylinder also give the game away!
