Excellent photos sir.Very,very welcome on this site.

Sorry, Deltics, or any other diesels, don't do it for me.

Steam, Diesel, Electric, Horse or any other form of Motive power. In fact any form of transport is welcome in my book.
I might even at a push admit to taking a photo of a GWR engine.

Sorry Dudes,

Diesel has no place in my affections. Can't see why anyone would like metal cans with no soul (but that's my opinion). It's steam that holds my interest and in order of preference:

1. NER.
2. GCR.
3. GER and GNR.
4. LNER (pre-nationalisation).
5. LMS (especially LNWR and MR).
6. A tie between GWR and Southern.
7. Standard class 2s to class 5s (sorry I don't have a high opinion of 6,7 and the 8P).
8. Tornado (and that's only because I'm sick of hearing about it.......it's still a cool machine).

As you can tell, it's the history that interests me. The older, the better.

Yes I am a steam man as well, but, there was something about those first generation diseasels. It was good character building stuff messing on with a recalcitrant Spanner boiler with two Deltic engines screaming and bouncing around a few inches from your lug holes or being wrapped up in newspapers to keep warm on a class 40 on a freezing cold winters night!

My list virtualy follows Malcolms but with 3 additions EM1, EM2 & ES1.

I have to agree with Malcolm except for the GWR. I have a soft spot for Southern steam but GWR are soul-less machines that all look the same.
Why Ixion settled on GWR I do not understand

As my 'name' shows, I liked the Deltics too. I also agree with what 52A says, especially about 40's in the winter. Even more so with 47's. I remember coming back from Berwick with a Class 6 in the middle of winter with all heaters on, coats wrapped around legs and frost on the inside of the cab windows! For some reason, that didn't happen on the footplate of an A4 etc........

About 20 years ago a t v programme showed a Leeds driver ready to go to London on a Class 47 in wintry weather. From his bag he produced a large, folded polythene fertiliser sack and inserted his legs into it prior to departure to try to stop the draughts whistling around.

Strangely enough the Deltics were OK as far as cab heaters went. The remark about A4s wasn't always true either, if you had a gale in the wrong quarter you ended up with a nice warm chest and a freezing cold back!

52A: Yes some of the Camden men on the night sleepers used to tell tales of icicles on the inside of the cab on the Duchesses running through the fells beteween Carnforth and Carlisle in winter weather.

As I stated earlier

On my bookshelf are what I would consider to be the 2 extremes of transport.
Sailing the rails - The Spurn Head railway.
and
K Boats.
Can anyone supply the rest of the title as a test.

Steam powered submarines?

Aye the K class were a bit of a disaster with some being sunk accidently during an excercise.
