My learned friends and myself have been discussing this pic, at first i thought possibly Berwick pre 1924 but it doesnt quite fit, Edinburgh Waverley has also been suggested, can any on the forum comment. We all think its NBR No.36
NBR36 (2).jpg

That loco looks pretty much devoid of even a wisper of steam & smoke so was it possibly staged for the photographer?.

I would discount Leith Central, as its end screen was more ornate than that in the photo, see:

Also the "Refreshments" sign mid-platform suggests a through station rather than a terminus.

How about Furness Railway No.36 and therefore just possibly Barrow?

I do not think it is NBR No.36.

I'm not to familiar with the NBR at all but that locos front end in particular has a bit of a 'Cally look' about to me?.

I have no idea as to the station, but I wonder whether this may be one of Sharp Stewart's K2 class for the Furness Railway - see http://lindal-in-furness.co.uk/RailPhotos/FR36.htm. General proportions are about right, and the lettering/numbering style on the buffer beam is similar to that for other Furness locomotives. Guard irons bolted to the outside of the buffer beam also seem to be in common with the locomotive shown in the OP.

Perhaps I should have been more honest.

I am reasonably sure it is Furness No.36 and it is Barrow Central. Even the leading arc roof carriage fits.

I think that's conclusive - see the outside of the same façade here...

Sorry guy's 'I don't know where my head was at' cos on reflection the 'front end' of that loco looks 'nothing' like the front end of a Caledonian Railway loco.

I have had confirmation of the location and locomotive from Mike Peascod editor of 'Cumbrian Railways' the CRA Journal.
