An apparently little known fact about the GNoSR 4-4-0 design that later became the LNER D40 is that the order was originally for ten but, due to financial difficulties, the London, Chatham & Dover took over the order for the last five, which became their Class G.
Even more curiously, when the boilers on the LC&D ones were worn out, secondhand replacements (obviously slightly different) were obtained from the Great Northern Railway (of England).
Despite the usual longevity of locos that entered the Southern Railway these were withdrawn between 1924 & 1927. Perhaps the LNER should have bought them...
