If those enthusiasts knew then what we know now! At the last Great Central Railwayana auction, the 'Worksplate" from Mons Meg was sold for £7,300. Cock of the North's seems to have been removed in the photo, but the other two still seem to retain them. Nobody was very interested in the plates then, though; and, although the one sold dates from the loco's construction (it has REBUILT 1944 on a plate riveted on many of the 'worksplates' being sold carry either the 1946 LNER, or BR, number, but still reach high prices.
I have used quotation marks around the word because, although they are described as such, I think that they were intended as ownership plates.
