Re: More old 127 Film
I think the station is Mansfield Town, as suggested.
There are a couple of shots in A J Lambert's East Midlands Branch Line Album, Ian Allan 1978. Unfortunately, they are both taken at the other end of the train shed, but the details do match up.

Re: More old 127 Film
Thanks folks.
I can narrow down the date range now, because East closed in 1966 and all I need to do is find evidence of when North was omitted from the station signs in favour of just plain Peterborough.
My first guess is the photo is 68/69.

Re: More old 127 Film
No, Mansfield is the b/w one earlier in the thread.
I just hi-jacked it because it seemed the most sensible place to add another one for identification.

Re: More old 127 Film
Hi John,
Not a bad idea to have one separate "slot - thread" for all those pics classed as "unidentified / mystery" locos & locations etc?
Everyone seems to enjoy a challenge and sometimes, as demonstrated on here, all sorts of interesting snippets of information come to light.....
There must be loads of old negs & prints in cupboards & lofts that have an identity crisis.
No matter what the quality is like, if people post them on here we could all perhaps contribute towards identification?

Re: More old 127 Film
Yes Iron Duke, that is a very good idea.
I enjoy a bit of detective work on old photos, and as often is the case, while looking for one subject I invariably stumble upon something else of interest.

Re: More old 127 Film
I took several Kodak b&w and colour films (12 & 24 film) of the Kings Cross to Hitchin area between 1970-74 mainly of s/boxes around Finsbury Park, Hatfield, Knebworth, Stevenage & Hitchin but unfortunately all have been 'lost' in moving house several times over the last 40 years, i really wish i had took more care of these photographs because i could have posted them as they would have interested a number of people on this forum.Iron Duke wrote:Hi John,

Re: More old 127 Film
That is a shame Micky, because it is amazing how photos from that era show how much has been lost since that time.
After steam ended, it seems that thousands of UK photographers just either gave up taking pictures of railways or concentrated on overseas steam, and the initial preservation movement.
The green/maroon to blue transition period seems to be one of the least photographed which is rather sad.

Re: More old 127 Film
Maybe they are not truly lost but just mislaid Micky?
I have recently turned up quite a few old negs of all shapes, sizes (and quality) that I could not remember seeing during the last two house moves.....!!?? Sometimes things are never unpacked and get moved on or are "stored" until times permits to have another look.
Maybe this is an opportunity (or an excuse) to look through all of those old files in the loft, who knows what gems may be lurking.
I do have my own very large collection of 35mm slides (2,000 +) from the late green / early blue era and these have been transported and guarded by me during every house move. As you say the "lesser value" negs of all shapes & sizes have "got lost" in all the other paperwork we carry around with us during our lives.
It's surprising how old negs once classed as sub standard gain a historic value and can easily be manipulated after scaaning etc.
Have a look for them Micky, in fact lets all have a rummage through our "junk", they may turn up yet!

Re: More old 127 Film
Micky, what a record they would have made, sounds good, pity about that.
Here is a rather poor lost "colour" pic randomly fished out of one of a box.
Anyone know where & approx when?
If anyone has any other "unknown soldiers" please post on this thread (or maybe start a new one?)

Re: More old 127 Film
Fascinating. I wonder if the small signal box, or covered ground frame, that just creeps into the photo on the extreme left by the telegraph pole will give a clue? Is it Midland design?
In which case it may be somewhere in South Yorks, North Notts?

You could well be correct John either the South Yorks & North Notts area although those areas are well out of my usual area of operations.strang steel wrote:Fascinating. There's possibly a overbridge of a footbridge behind the photographer because of the co-acting semaphore stop signals?.
The semaphore signals that the train has already passed looks like it has a distant signal beneath the stop signal which suggests that this unknown location has atleast 2 s/boxes and also what looks like sidings on the left of the picture so it could be a fair size location.

The signal box may well be Midland, but of even more distinctively Midland Railway design is the black corrugated iron lamp hut visible between the box and the train.strang steel wrote:Fascinating. Re: More old 127 Film
Thank you for your replies, here are 3 more straight out of the tin.
Any clues on locations / dates?
Negs are pretty tatty, there must be thousands similar out there chaps.
Post some up for identification or just a discussion....
