Brakevan at Wisbech Station

Post by PinzaC55 »

In January 1980 I visited the site of Wisbech station on the still (just) extant ex GER March to Wisbech branch and saw this old brakevan parked on the buffers. It has a white wagon label with a red stripe on the side.Does anyone know which company made it and possibly whether it was preserved? It was very unusual to see a van without end platforms on BR in 1980 except for the LMS pattern.

I believe this is a photo of a "Toad E" built by the LNER in the '30's. The earlier Toad B is similar, except for a wooden ducket, rather than pressed steel as seen in this photo. There is a good Parkside kit of the Toad B, as well as drawings and photos of both vehicles in Tatlow's early volume on LNER goods wagons. Hope this helps. John

Many thanks for that John! I am sure back then I must have looked at the axlebox covers but 29 years play havoc with my memory lol.
